What a shambles
» Posted on December 21, 2006 10:09 AM » Category: Cricket

Am I missing something here? The England one day squad has just been announced. The two keepers are Chris Read and Paul Nixon. No place for Geraint Jones.

Yet for the Ashes, Read was dropped and replaced by Jones for his supposed batting superiority.

Surely, if ever there was a time for a batsman who can keep it's one day games. And so what do the selectors do? Drop Jones completely from the squad and give the job back to the supposedly lesser batsman, Read (not that they should ever have dropped him from the Test team, but that's another story).

Shambles doesn't even come close to describing it.

The same people who kept Monty Panasar off an already weakened Ashes team until the situation was desperate and then brought him in to share in the final failure. And whose football colleagues did not even give consideration to Alan Curbishley for the England job, taking the inexperienced Steve Maclaren in place of a guy who had singlehandedly made tiny Charlton into a Premiership team and who now seems to have waved the same magic wand over - sorry - your least favourite team, West Ham. Desk warriors are the curse of Britain.

I think even the Australians would be embarrassed by this. It's like the lucicrous Welsh Rugby squad which toured years ago and ended up brawling at the team reception. They needed to be up against a well-oiled team for the Ashes and what did they get? Heads must roll!
