Should you be so inclined, you can read my chapter on sport in Living and Giving, the Jewish Contribution to Life in the UK, 1656-2006 here.
There are also chapters by Lord Janner QC, Lord Kalms, Sir Sigmund Sternberg, His Honour Israel Finestein QC, Prof Geoffrey Cantor, Prof David Katz, Gr Gerry Black, Alex Brummer, Norman Lebrecht and Henry Morris.

I read your chapter, Stephen (and a couple of others) and, as a Mancunian now living in Swindon, I have to say I could not believe! :) that you'd missed out Mike Summerbee. Not only did he represent England, he won FA Cup and League Championship medals with Man City. Even more intriguingly perhaps he is one of 3 generations of Summerbee professional footballers - his father George(?) played for Preston NE and his son Nicky played for both Swindon and Man City (as he did himself).

Dear Stephen
As Athletics correspondent of the Jewish Chronicle and a friend of James Espir, grandson of Teddy Smouha, I would like to correct your reference to Ellis Smouha as bronze medallist in the 4x100 metre relay in the 1928 Olympics. The medallist was in fact Ellis' younger brother, Edward Ralph "Teddy" Smouha. This is independently confirmed in, for example, Melvyn Watman's "Encyclopedia of British Athletics" - I possess the second edition, 1967.
I would be very grateful if you could let me know the source of the reference to Ellis, as the Smouha family would like to correct this error for good. Please could you email me at brian_222 at bigfoot dot com.
Many thanks
Brian Sacks
