I can only echo Daniel's words about the death of Lord Harris.

It wasn't just SDPers he invited along to IEA lunches. When I was at the Fabian Society he would ring me up and positively demand that I came along to hear the likes of John Gray (when he believed in markets) and other IEA stalwarts. Not that it took any persuasion. Even then, in the 1990s when the IEA had already won the battle of ideas and defeated state socialism, their events were always an intellectual treat for me.

Only last year we were honoured at CNE when Ralph travelled over to Brussels to accept our Adam Smith Award (which we awarded jointly to him and Arthur Seldon, who had passed away between us arranging the award and the ceremony).

There are not many people who can genuinely be said to have improved the lot of their fellow human beings, but in his push for freedom, that is exactly what he did.

The world is diminished by his loss.

UPDATE: Helen Szamuely has a good obituary. She writes: "Ralph Harris came from a working class family in north London, went to a grammar school..." That school was Tottenham Grammar School, where he was three years ahead of my father.
