I have a particular liking for book reviews in which the reviewer lambasts the author of a book for supposed factual errors, only for the reviewer's own words to reveal that he is in fact the one making basic errors.
There's a wonderful example of this in today's Sunday Times. When I see the name William Dalrymple above a piece, I know I am about to read a collection of pernicious, dangerous drivel and, sure enough, his review in today's Sunday Times of Michael Gove's terrific Celsius 7/7 - a book which should be read by anyone who cares about the future of freedom and our civilisation - is full of the usual Dalrymple stuff.
When someone writes this of a book, they should make sure that their own assertions are on firm ground:
Gove’s book is a confused epic of simplistic incomprehension, riddled with more factual errors and misconceptions than any other text I have come across in two decades of reviewing books on this subject.
Pot to kettle: "You are BLACK!"
Let's ignore the mistakes Dalrymple makes in his supposed destruction of the supposed errors in Gove's argument. Dalrymple also shows that he doesn't even get the very basis of his attack on Gove right:
None of this would matter if Gove were still ring-fenced within his op-ed-page padded cell; horrifyingly, however, he now sits in the Conservative shadow cabinet...
Would that he did. Michael Gove is shadow Housing Spokesman. This is the Shadow Cabinet. Can you see Gove's name there? Nor can I. That's because he isn't in it.
Any book lacerated by William Dalrymple for getting its facts wrong is a book which demands to be read.
(I wonder if by any chance William Dalrymple is related to - for it is he! - Neil Clark.)

The critic had better be pretty darned sure he has his facts correct. I am curently wading through the Kamm/Stuart A business over Chomsky. As for Gove, he always appeared to me to be a pretty reasonable person. Welcome back - I wasn't expecting it so soon so must add you now to the little Sunday roundup.
Take, just for example, these deeply offensive ramblings:
"Bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has written that the repressive campaign waged against the second intifada by Sharon in autumn 2000 provided Al-Qaeda’s opportunity: as the corpses of dead children piled up, al-Zawahiri realised that here was the rallying cry that could unify the Muslim world. All that was needed was a huge strike and the US system in the Middle East would begin to unravel. And so it has indeed proved, to the peril of us all."
1) Bin Laden mentioned nothing about Israel in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Later it was given as one of many reasons for the attacks. If anything motivated Bin Laden it was the presence of U.S. troops on Saudi soil.
2) The idea that 9/11 could have been planned in less than 12 months from start to finish is utterly risible.
3) He makes absolutely no mention of the many hundreds of Jewish dead deliberately murdered by Islamofascist homicide bombers. Indeed, he describes Israel's desperate campaign to ward off the genocidal campaign waged against it as an act of repression, one in which it was Israel which was deliberately murdering children.
4) His claims in 3 above together with his notion that it is the Jewish State which was responsible for 9/11 and every other Islamofascist terrorist outrage are grotesque blood libels. Indeed, these are ideas which would have been immediately embraced by Hitler.
Yet another reason why the Jews of Britain should leave without delay (the problem is not necessarily with the piece or even the Times but the rotten society which will nod approvingly). And if they're not convinced, here are a few more:
1) The genocide of European Jewry could not have occurred without the almost complete and willing collaboration of Europe including Great Britain.
2) At war's end and for the many decades that followed the nations of Europe actively protected virtually all of the very worst murderers of Jews. Nor did they do anything to return the vast bulk of the property which was stolen from the Jews who had been murdered by their gentile neighbours.
3) Europe actively works for the destruction of Israel both officially and through the media. The deligitimisation of Israel is easily the most widely popular political cause in Europe.
4) Anti-Semitism in Europe is going through the roof. In the UK, city mayors make openly anti-Semitic comments, major newspapers are full to the brim with anti-Semitic diatribes and Jewish girls are beaten within an inch of their lives on public transport.
How little Britain has deserved the enormous contribution of her Jewish "citizens." How very important it is that the Jews of Britain leave as soon as possible.
A final word about Dalyrymple. If at some point his three children are blow to pieces as a result of a terrorist attack in New Delhi and he and Ms. Fraser have spent the day trying to identify body parts, I would earnestly request that they please calm down and investigate their consciences as to where the real responsibility lies.
Most of what Dalrymple writes is an attack on Israel or Jews disguised as something else. This is no different.
As for his plea for Westerners to understand Islam, I haven't read Gove's book but I have begun Wright's. It's very good. It begins with Sayid Qutb's sojourn in America, which the Islamic fundamentalist found to be empty and corrupt.
So, by Dalrymple's own recommendation, we should read Wright's book. Wright, an excellent reporter, tells us that we are up against an enemy who hates us for what we are, not for what we do.
Which is the exact opposite of what Dalrymple believes.
Go figure.
Particularly if you are at work, I would advise against clicking on any of the Chinese characters above.
