The so-called obliteration of Beirut
» Posted on July 27, 2006 04:43 PM » Category: Middle East

The truth of Charles H Spurgeon's aphorism that “A lie travels round the world, while Truth is putting on her boots” is shown daily by the credulous reporting from the Hezbollah propaganda machine.

But the truth will out. Just as the supposed Jenin 'massacre' was first shown to be no such thing by a map which showed the affected areas, so too Israel's current actions are not the destruction of Beirut which the BBC would have us believe, but a carefully targeted action against the key terror points. Have a look at this map, which shows the affected area in grey, and tell me how it shows that most of Beirut has been attacked.

UPDATE: The source of the above map has made clear that it is now out of date, but that although it now has innacuracies, "the general idea of a small part of the city being affected is accurate".

While you're at it, you could also look at this map of further "key terror points":

Not that I'm a pedant, but I always thought the 'truth gets its boots on' quote was originally coined by Mark Twain.

It's called "Jenin syndrome" isn't it?

But... I'm not sure that the map is 100% accurate. For example the (new) airport whose runways were bombed on day 1 is not shown - it is at the extreme south-west of the city, on the coast.

Given these doubts I searched high & low for any credible source showing the scale of destruction and couldn't find any. I am amazed ... surely that would be a rather important part of news analysis? Seems to bear out the stories that Hizb are controlling access to bombed areas very, very tightly.

The report alleges the soldiers held six people, including two young children, for 12 hours, at which time intense gunfire was exchanged between the soldiers and armed Palestinians.
A 43-year-old woman was also forced to walk in front of the soldiers during a search of all apartments in one of the buildings.

No apologies - check it now:

I have a few questions really in terms of non military aid and assistance to the Palestinians. How much does Iran, Syria and other Arab nations provide to Palestine? Is it comparable to the EU, US and I believe Israel contributes too! In my view tragically for the Palestinians it suits the Arabs & certainly Persians to keep Palestine in a state of poverty, war and disorganisation as a mechanism to try and at least discredit and ultimately to destroy Israel. I ask the question of the British left and those others on the "Horrible Israel bandwagon" where would you rather live Tel Aviv or Teheran, in my experience of people on the left many of their pastimes, views and freedoms would receive a stony reception.

Stephen, as someone else has said, the map you gave doesn't look like the shape of the city as it really is laid out (e.g. from the easily accessible satellite photos on Google Earth).

It excludes the airport and the large parts of the city and linked urban areas to the north and south.

Can you say who drafted the map?

How likely are they to have truthfully accounted for all the known bombings?
