Fear: Anti-Semitism in Poland After Auschwitz

Jan T. Gross, a Princeton professor, has written an astonishing book, an expose of vicious anti-Semitism, complete with medieval, murderous pogroms raging in Poland -- after the end of World War II.

Fear documents in meticulous detail how, after the Nazi defeat, Polish citizens of all classes set upon the remaining Jews in their communities and murdered them outright. During the 1946 Kielce pogrom, soldiers who were called to the scene to restore order instead tossed women out of windows. In the courtyard below, townspeople finished off those not yet dead.

Blood pooled in the streets as people executed their Jewish neighbors mercilessly. An infant was shot in the head, its mother already dead, because, the murderer says, "it was crying." On trains, boys in a youth group dutifully move from car to car singling out the Jewish passengers, the more readily for them to be murdered at the next stop, where a bloodthirsty mob waits impatiently.

Gross supplies impeccable documentation: witness testimony, court testimony from the desultory trials (most of the killers got off), letters, diaries, films. All tell the same story: Anti-Semitism was so embedded in the culture of Poland that even witnessing the outrages of Auschwitz and Treblinka, which were not concealed from sight, did not dissuade large sections of the Polish population from the murderous project of cleansing their country of Jews. Only in their being less well-organized did they differ from their Nazi occupiers, in whose efforts against the Jews many gladly assisted.

This is all too sad and true. My father escaped postwar Zakopane, his home town with his life, barely. That was after serving Poland longer than the duration of WWII.

I vaguely remember his becoming an American in 1955. I always throw his choice of citizenship in the face of those who hate and defame America. As Dinah Shore once sang, America's the greatest land of all!

Maybe it had something to do with the number of Jews who collaborated with 'Uncle Joe' Stalin's invaders.

Given the number of anti-Polish articles in the left wing press of late it would seem that hatred of Polish Catholics has managed to survive despite the incredible suffering of poles in the 20th century.

I wondered how long it would be before a Pole turned up with an ugly and typical Polish-style revisionist history in which even if the anti-Semitism and murders are actually admitted the Jews are blamed for them.

Gross dutifully attempts to examine why so many Poles of all social classes revealed themselves to be so brutish and lacking in compassion as to have excluded themselves from civilization itself. He can discover no answer. He ponders whether Poles murdered the few Jews remaining alive in Poland because the Poles thought the Jews had brought Communism to Poland. They had not. Most Polish Jews were not in the Communist Party, were not Stalinists. He ponders whether Poles really believed that the Jews killed Christian children and then used their blood to make matzo, or to give blood transfusions to concentration camp survivors. He discovers that no one really believed these absurdities.

Gross wonders whether the Nazis had corrupted many Poles by exterminating the Jews openly. But then he notes that pogroms were flourishing before the time of the camps, as they would after them. He considers whether many postwar Poles killed Jews because they didn't want to return illegally appropriated Jewish property. Then he remembers that the overwhelming majority of Jews were not coming back, and everyone knew it. He examines Stalin's virulent anti-Semitism, but that was in another country.

Gross finds no explanation for these horrendous deeds because there is none. He is looking at pure, unregenerate evil. Based on his evidence, it is not gone yet. Gross reveals how, into the 1990s, Polish historians covered up these horrors. A 2004 poll conducted in Poland revealed that 40 percent of respondents still thought Poland was controlled by Jews.

"People engaged in a murderous encounter belong in effect to a different species," Gross concludes. For balance, one might add that the Poles were not alone in history in separating themselves from civilization, that they have been joined by the exterminators of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the slave traders, and the Belgian mass murderers in the Congo, to cite by no means the only examples.

Fear is so important a story because the existence of these pogroms after the war is not common knowledge. Although it is well-known that Poles applauded Jews' being carted away by the Nazis so that they could appropriate their property, and that anti-Semitism has flourished for centuries in Poland, the fact that pogroms could progress unimpeded after Auschwitz may be news to many.

Some other facts:

1) Jews had lived in Poland for centuries. They had fought for independence, built great businesses, were at the forefront of the professions (over 70% of the doctors in Warsaw in 1939 were Jews), had given enormous sums to charity, provided many of Poland's greatest artists, writers, architects, poets and scientists.

2) Anti-Semitism had been rife in Poland for centuries. In the 1930's, years before the Nazis invaded, anti-Semitism was given the official seal of approval: Jews were beaten daily in the streets; virulently anti-Semitic articles appeared regularly in the newspapers; all across Poland the church exhorted people to murder and persecute Jews; anti-Semitic speeches by government ministers were commonplace; Jews were barred from owning all kinds of businesses and they were refused employment in all government departments; in universities most Jews were refused entry, but if they did manage to get a place they were compelled to sit on seperate benches and were often beaten up by other students.

3) 350,000 Jews fought for Poland during World War II. 10% of the Polish officers killed at the Katyn forest were Jews.

Nonsense. In typical fashion you try to direct attention away from yourselves with this utterly specious argument. These books and articles are not anti-Polish in the sense you mean it, but merely examine in detail the depth of that "pure, unregenerate evil" (see above) of the Polish people in their treatment of their Jewish fellow citizens. That Poland appears to have learned absolutely nothing since the war and indeed still revels in anti-Semitism in the almost total absence of Jews hardly redounds to her credit either.

That you would defend for any reason the murder of women and children by bloodthirsty mobs of non-Jewish Poles shows that not only are you cut from exactly the same type of cloth as the person who shot dead the Jewish child mentioned in the article above but also that virulent Jew-hatred is an ineradicable feature of Polish culture.

Poland may have been a victim, but she was also a perpetrator of many of the greatest cruelties the world has ever seen.

Gross his acclaimed book Neighbors : The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne Poland in which he retells the history of just one of the massacres carried out by Poles during the Holocaust when over 1,600 Jews were rounded up and murdered by their non-Jewish neighbours (most were burned alive in a barn)

Anti semitism is inexcusable, but I do not understand how this justifies the creation of Israel.

There are many who believe that after the Holocaust it is Europe's existence which should be questioned and not Israel's.

Israel acts as a haven for Jews from Western countries who suffered from persecution and worse for almost two thousand years and for Jews from the Arab nations who were treated at best as third-class citizens. It was also inconceivable that most Holocaust survivors could return to the very countries which had just tried to murder them and still would have given half a chance.

Given that the Holocaust could not have occurred without the almost total and willing collaboration of most of occupied Europe and also the so-called "neutrals," the alternative would be to give Jews a chunk of Europe. This would compensate us not just for the genocide but also for the $1 trillion worth of property that was stolen from the Jews who were murdered by the gentiles of Europe. I vote for the South of France. You can resettle the current inhabitants where you want and we'll bring over the Western Wall and a few other knick-knacks and then the Palestinians can spend the next fifty years turning Israel back into desert. We'll also want our nuclear weapons of course to protect ourselves from our non-Jewish neighbours (way more dangerous than any Arab).

Had nations like Britain or indeed America not wanted the creation of Israel then they shouldn't have effectively collaborated with the Nazis by deliberately cutting off all escape routes to the Jews of Europe. Had the Arab nations not wanted Israel then they should have not treated Jews as dhimmis.

Regarding the Katyn Forest massacre, Jews were, according to Juri Slezkine's 'Jewish Century', disproportionately represented in the NKVD; “anyone who had the misfortune to fall into the hands of the Cheka stood a very good chance of finding himself confronted with and possibly shot by a Jewish investigator.”

If you hate us so much, why do you continue to live amongst us? With one of the world's lowest birth rates, Israel wants Jewish immigrants. It's not about that though. It's about hatred and revenge and ethnic interest.

It is the reason why Polish Christian nationalism is targeted. It is because the Poles realise that Jewish interest is not their interest.

Pace Pollard, most historians of Zionism do not believe Israel came into existence as a bolthole from pogroms and persecutions. The transition from a national home to a unilateral declaration of independence was precipitate, opportunistic and not dictated by 'never again' considerations; in fact Ben Gurion was against letting the new state become a refuge for too many WW2 survivors, saying that he needed healthy, virtuous pioneers rather than those who were broken in body and spirit or had survived by dubious collaboration.

See, for example, Peter Novick's 'The Holocaust in American Life' for a careful discussion of contemporary reactions to the founding of the Judenstaat. Israel as a refuge for victims of antisemitism is a retrospective justification. It only began to be widespread after the Eichmann trial and the Six Day War, when left wing governments needed refusenik immigration from the USSR to keep the Ashkenazi element from being outnumbered by Mizrahi and Arabs.
