Get real

I watched the England game in a bar in Rome. Coming back yesterday was instructive - a real lesson in the partiality which dominates coverage here.

When Rooney was sent off, there was not one person in the bar who thought the incident anything other than a straight red card. How can stamping on a player's groin not be? Rooney is lucky that he merely had to leave a football pitch. I can think of no good reason why he is not behind bars in a German prison - his violent conduct is at least as bad as that of many of the fans who were arrested.

Blow me down, now that I'm home it's not Rooney who is being pilloried but Ronaldo, who did nothing more than say something like 'that's a red, ref'. Yes, he should have kept his mouth shut, but I'd be grateful if someone could tell me why pointing out the severity of a foul is a worse offence than committing the foul.

The truth of the matter is that England did not deserve to be alongside France, Italy and Germany. We were, to use the technical term. crap. We have some good players - Rooney, when he keeps his cool, Gerrard and Owen when he is fit and - Come On You Spur! - Lennon. But most are typical English plodders given a veneer of something better because we usually see them play in Premiership teams alongside far better players. England are a second rank football team. Just as the league table doesn't lie, nor does the fact that we now always go out in the quarter finals. That's because the quater finals is the level of our ability.

Berate Sven for getting £24 million for doing bugger all all you like - and I rejoice that we're shot of him - but it's not Sven who was the real problem. It's the players. Big Phil, Wenger, Lippi. Jurgen, whoeever; none would have made any real difference. If the players aren't good enough, they're just not good enough.

There are a few problems with your analysis:

- I think it's rather questionable whether it was stamping. The guy has just tried to beat 3 people off the ball, including falling to the ground. He was going for the ball agressivly and maybe misplaced his foot. Maybe he did it on purpose, but from the replay I don't think so.

- He wastn't sent off for the stamping. Watch the replay of the ref. He didn't look like he was even going to give a card until Rooney pushes Ronaldo (his team mate trying to get him sent off). After the push the ref immediatly gives him the red card. Ronaldo walks away, winks to his teamates and Rooney is off.

This was clearly Portugal's tactic, they know Rooney is an idiot who will rise to things like this so they niggled him and tried to get him sent off. Personally I find that sort of behaviour as bad as anything Rooney did.

The complaining about Rooney's sending off is absurd, stamping on someone''s testicles is wrong even if it is Ricardo Carvalho. Sam Allardyce's article in the NotW is breathtaking:

"John Terry got booked for a brave, committed challenge, which actually ended up with him getting injured and then, of course, Wayne Rooney was sent off for, well, I still can't be certain.

He was actually fouled in trying to challenge for the ball but because he is so strong, so honest, so determined to win the ball, he stayed on his feet and was then penalised for it."

That said I don't agree with the idea that the players were simply not good enough, man for man they are on a similar level to the four teams remaining in the tournament.

Spot on, Stephen.

It was absolutely depressing to listen to the mealy-mouthed comments from the BBC pundits. And now, we have Gerrard whinging on about the very same thing in today's papers.

The truth, so eloquently denied by Chris, is that Rooney committed one of the vilest assaults on another player seen on a pitch. It was not the 'groin' that felt the full force of Rooney's boot but the man's testicles.

Then we have this drivel about Ronaldo being a temmate of Rooney and shouldn't have said anything. Both are mercenaries currently earning their pay at Man Utd; to call them teammates on this basis is daft.

Ronaldo's true teammate was the one Rooney assaulted and he did what you or I would have done seeing a teammate kicked to the ground in the testicles; he protested.

Frankly. Rooney's conduct warranted a criinal charge of assault. At the very least he illustrated just why he is not fit to earn a place in a national team for a very long time to come.

His defenders should be ashamed, not only of him, but of themselves for spouting drivel.

Half right, Stephen.

Yes, of course Rooney deliberately stamped on Carvalho's goolies. Of course he deserved to go for it (Chris - the ref indicated on the pitch it was for stamping. He mimed a stamp. Although he didn't have the card out immediately it waas on it's way).

Where you're wrong is in saying other coarches wouldn't have made a difference. Wenger, Lippi, Capello, Scolari, Hiddink, each would have been far superior to Eriksson, a man with no courage in a big game. Yes, England stank the place out, won't be missed and the players were poor on the whole, but Eriksson played his part in it alright.

Luckily that's the end of the Sven era.

In retrospect we'll come to see that he was terribly overrated, and had no motivational skills at all. He seemed embarrassingly committed to David Beckham, seemingly dazzled by the players media personality, and therefore blinded to the fact that Beckham has been a one-trick pony for far too long, and was actually keeping a far better player out of the side.

Let's hope it's the end of the Beckham era too...

Just think, if we'd have gone through it would have been a choice between a 6 foot 7 trier, and a 17 year old for the strikers role....

Not entirley sure what you guys are watching, but this is the version I have seen:

Rooney is an utter idiot, don't get me wrong - and he really shouldn't be in the team when he can't control himself, still I get why people are pissed at Ronaldo.

Absolutely correct, Chris

I disagree about Sven. If we had a real striker on Saturday, we would have won, simple as that. There were other options available for the squad.

Chris, And your point is?

Just what does he do that any England player hasn't done a thousand times before? Does he berate Rooney to which Rooney responds? No. A team mate is lying on the ground clutching the objects of Rooney's spiteful anger and speaks to the Ref.

And however you feel about Ronaldo how does that absolve Rooney of the assault?

All of this whingeing about Ronaldo is just another way of saying that you can't trust conniving, Johnny Foreigner.

GH, Sorry, I just don't think he did it on purpose - if he did I understand your point of view, but I don't think he did. When I called him an idiot it was for rising to Ronaldo, not the foot in the groin which looks to me like an accident.

Stated by: Chris on July 4, 2006 1:37 AM

Also, I disagree on you thinking Ronaldo is just a scape goat. When it was Beckham sent off, everyone (including the press) absolutly destroyed him, because it was completly 100% his fault. This situation is perhaps somewhat different, hence the different response.

Rooney is a twat.....he clearly stamped on Carvalho's bollocks on purpose. I don't understand how anyone could deny that...
