Bloody cheek, having to register to read articles which are subsidised by the taxpayer anyway. Isn't Andrew Marr Mr Jackie Ashley? Or is it Alastair Campbell? I never can remember which liberal journo is sleeping with which liberal journo. For a bunch of liberal muliticulties they certainly don't show much diversity when it comes to putting it about.

Anyway, Melanie Phillips' great sin in the eyes of the left isn't being an honest, moralist rightie. It's being an apostate. She gave up the religion, stopped believing all that Marxist tosh. She jilted them. 20-odd years at the Grauniad and then she ups sticks. They just can't take it. Is she Jewish also? I know her husband is and that goes down badly on the left. Imagine that, a Jewish apostate of the Marxist religion. no wonder they hate her.

I have never thought of Jackie Ashley as very bright, but she was the daughter of an MP and they tend to feel they have some insight or inside track. She is also a TV producer and that makes one suspect a condescension.

Melanie Phillips has outgrown The Guardian and New Society to emerge as a fine intellect sometimes given to a more raw presentation than her urbane husband Joshua Rozenberg who is excellent in his calm analysis, but Melanie Phillips cares.................it is not an intellectual debate for her but an issue deeply felt.

Jackie Ashley writes what the Guardian wants and does not have any particularly depth; I doubt she faces any of the fears and trepidations of say French Jews or Dutch filmmakers............and she has that smug Bloomsbury Group naivety that made them irrelevant to the primary forces of that era.

I too have ordered Londonistan - I find the situation truly nutty and trace the degeneracy in this country to the burning of books in Bradford - our European Culture did not take offence and did not react harshly - yet did not the poet Heinrich heine warn us that "those who begin by burning books shall end by burning people" ?

The complacency of the Jackie Ashleys is that their dream world is coming apart as the characters in the dream tear the tableau in shreds

It is pretty sneery - very similar in tone to the sort of profile Melanie Phillips' own paper often runs on people with whom it disagrees.

James - My post might have been too opaque for you. I was illustrating that coming up with an old saw doesn't make it relevant. People who have no real argument often quote things like "Sauce for the goose ..." and other aphorisms because they think their familiarity somehow adds gravitas to a thought they can't be bothered to develop for themselves. My point was that when the Mail profiles people with whom it disagrees, it makes no secret of its hostile editorial attitude towards them. Its writers mock, sneer and attack in terms that often a great deal more vituperative than Jackie Ashley's towards Melanie Phillips. I'd love to be able to post some links but as far as I can see, The Mail doesn't seem to put its interviews and profiles on its site. Still, read the paper for a week or two and you'll soon see what I mean.

All papers do this to some degree but the Mail is probably the best/worst at it. I don't particularly like this sort of journalism, but it is a fact of life and something to which individuals of all political hues and none are subjected (see, for example, the treatment meted out to Heather Mills MacCartney passim and to Noam Chomsky in the Guardian, which led to a long and tedious debate).

"Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander" means something like "Everybody is subject to the same treatment". Therefore supporters of Melanie Phillips shouldn't be surprised if she is treated in the same way as, say Noam Chomsky, Heather Mills MacCartney or whichever other figure finds their way into a newspaper's sights. The more so, probably if, like Ms Phillips, you work on a paper that is famed for dishing it out.

Melanie Phillips is being attacked because of the stance she has adopted on radical Islam and terrorism in Britain. As we know, the hard left (Jackie Ashley and her fellow travellers) has long made common cause with the radical Islam. This is, as Melanie and others have ruthlessly pointed out, bordering on the psychopathic as radical Islamists are oppressors/murderers of women and murderers of homosexuals - the hard left's two favourite victim groups.

This is why they attack Melanie Phillips. She puts them on the spot and they have no response. They are not all of a flutter because her paper publishes steamy gossip about Heather Mills.

Verity - Yes, Jackie Ashley attacked Melanie Phillips because she disagrees with her views. She doesn't make any secret of that and I don't see what the problem is. Newspapers are, to a greater or lesser extent, political entities and their positions are reflected in their journalism. Hostile profiles, interviews, book reviews etc are a part of journalism and always have been (politically slanted news reporting, as practised particularly by the Mail and the Independent is a different matter, in my view). Melanie Phillips clearly understands this - on her site she has linked to the article without complaint.

One last point....

I don't for a minute suppose that Melanie Phillips would have been in any doubt about the treatment she was letting herself in for by agreeing to this interview. But she clearly thought it was worthwhile in order to promote her book and get her views across.

Thank you for the course in Journalism 101. I think we all know why Melanie agreed to be interviewed by Jackie Ashley. You have shifted the argument. "It is pretty sneery - very similar in tone to the sort of profile Melanie Phillips' own paper often runs on people with whom it disagrees.

The Guardian may be subsidised by the taxpayer via its recruitment ads, but it is paid for by the group's Autotrader brand. So while George Monbiot is hectoring you about emissions over morning coffee, his wages are paid in large part by the impending autogeddon.
