Our friend Chris McGreal (the Guardian's Israel correspondent - see here, here, here , here, and here) is at it again.

This week's New Statesman has his entry in its

Heroes of our time - the top 50

24. Mordechai Vanunu - Israeli whistle-blower
Persecuted for exposing his country's nuclear weapons programme

Mordechai Vanunu served 18 years in prison, 11 of them in solitary confinement, for revealing to the Sunday Times the truth about Israel's atomic weapons. Heralded abroad as a prisoner of conscience and a courageous voice for peace, he is still widely regarded as a traitor at home in Israel.

...After Vanunu's release in 2004, the Israeli authorities made public the recordings of him being interrogated. "I am neither a traitor nor a spy," he said. "I only wanted the world to know what was happening. We don't need a Jewish state. There needs to be a Palestinian state. Jews can, and have, lived anywhere, so a Jewish state is not necessary."

It's no wonder that McGreal should be so fulsome in his praise of a man "widely regarded as a traitor at home in Israel". Perhaps he is regarded thus because, well, er...he is a traitor to his country.

The final quote from Vanunu is a denial of Jewish history; of Jewish religious rite and heritage; of anti-Semitism; of the Holocaust; of the primary motivation for a Jewish state; of the primary goal of securing Israel’s existence; and of the importance of security in the Israeli (and Zionist) psyche.

Not, of course, that in choosing to cite as a hero such a man and to use such a quote from him, McGreal reveals anything about his own beliefs. Oh no. Not at all.

Leaving aside the usual schoolboy sarcasm "Oh no. Not at all.", I'm intrigued to know why you've decided Vananu "is a traitor to his country".

What he did was to bring further into the open an undisclosed nuclear weapons programme. You may believe Israel was entitled to such a nuclear weapons programme, but if so, why could its existence not be admitted openly? It isn't as if Israel signed the NPT.

Israel was widely suspected of having such a programme before Vanunu's revelations (indeed, we know Britain and France assisted with it), so what changed? Israel continues to deny it; everybody else continues to assume it exists. Vanunu may have violated a non-disclosure agreement, but then Mossad violated numerous laws in their kidnapping of him in Italy.

I fail to see why he was a traitor for confirming to the world what it already strongly suspected: that Israel had nuclear weapons. What did Israel lose by his revelations?

Gee. Vanunu gave blueprints up to a British publication. Of course he's a traitor.

I bet, Stuart, you would be able to see that quickly enough if a British traitor gave up blueprints to vital state secrets in Britain that were trumpeted all over the press in the US, say, or China.

Meanwhile, Vanunu is now a Christian and no longer a Jew, which is one reason he was "persuaded" to give up the blueprints in the first place. So I don't see what right he has to speak in an authoritative manner using the word "we" to say anything about the Jews.

In effect, he is saying, "as a Christian, it is my opinion that the world does not need a Jewish state." Which has quite a different rhetorical force than "as a Jew, it is my opinion that the world does not need a Jewish state."

He publicised details of Israel's nuclear weapons programme, the effect of which was to confirm to everyone what had long been assumed: that Israel had nuclear weapons, and that it had lied to inspectors about Dimona. It is hard to see how something that was widely assumed was a "vital state secret".

As for blueprints, the only ones I heard about were ones drawn in his cell and seized by the authorities; the information he gave the Sunday Times consisted of descriptions and photographs of Dimona. Can you tell me to whom he "gave up" these blueprints?

It's interesting that you raise the analogy of Britain. Presumably you take the same line on Saddam Hussein's son-in-law, for cooperating with UNSCOM?

As for Vanunu's Jewishness, or otherwise, you appear to be conflating religious observance with Jewishness -- an obvious idiocy. You're seemingly taking the ludicrous position that non-religious Israelis are unqualified to comment on Israel. You also do not explain how you know his Christianity led him to this terrible betrayal -- are you psychic, or did he make a disclosure regarding this that I'm not aware of?

- Actually, Israel has a rather well-known policy of 'strategic ambiguity', that is, neither confirming nor denying they have nuclear weapons.

And, in my view, McGreal should be given his marching orders and be kicked out of Israel.

Oh, and however you want to spin it, treason is quite easily defined according to law and what Vanunu did was treason.

Your opinion - I assume and please tell me if I'm wrong - is that treason to Israel (a fairly straightforward concept in this case of revealing state secrets which could be damaging to the state) is never treason since 1. it's only Israel that is damaged and, furthermore and more importantly, 2. Israel is an illegitimate state so damage to the "state" is a contradiction in terms.

This isn't a case - as it would be in the UK - of some trivial contravention of the Official Secrets Act, this is connected with Israel's survival: unimportant to StuartA but of some consequence to Israelis.

I'm happy to do that, Umbongo: you're wrong. I never used the word treason (that goes for J too) and I made no such blanket statement regarding Israel.

Nobody has explained how Vanunu's revelations might have "damaged" Israel. As I have already made clear, all he did was confirm the widespread assumption that Israel had nuclear weapons. The "secret" was already out. (I've yet to hear these revelations about "blueprints", so I'm going to assume that he did not hand over any.) What he produced was general information about the Negev Nuclear Research Center, much of which had already been suspected. You're in a weak position, therefore, to claim that Vanunu's activities threatened the "survival" of Israel (not, of course, that you have any evidence for your aspersion regarding my views on this).

You're right that Israel has a non-denial denial policy with respect to nuclear weapons. However, it is also true that when inspectors were sent to Dimona the Israelis lied to them and concealed their weapons programme. In this they adopted a comparable policy to Saddam Hussein.

I also note, with regard to Saddam Hussein, that nobody answered the point about Hussein Kamel. Why would that be, I wonder?

As for McGreal being given "his marching orders", the idea that that journalists be expelled for not following the state line is too contemptible for discussion.

Everybody "knew" but nobody really knew until Vanunu confirmed it. No harm done? I don't think so: this was a part of Israeli foreign policy and strategy - undermining that strategy was treason. As to survival, who knows? But I would guess that in Israel's position the survival of the state - rather than just advantage or disadvantage - hinges on factors of foreign policy of which nuclear capability is a part.

Agreed, and therefore Stuart, you will presumably be happy to expressly dissassociate yourself from some of the equally contemptible attacks on Israel's status as a free and democratic society.
