Big Phil is easily the best of the bunch. The fact that McLaren's name is being mentioned is all the argument you need against having an English manager at all cost. His achievements are seriously limited. Allardyce is a great club manager, but his talents lie in discovering cheap talent and motivating players to over achieve. I would probably put O'Neil in that category too, who in footballing terms is just as foreign as Scholari anyway.

If we're going to stand by the assertion that the England manager's job is one of the best in the world, up there with Juventus, AC Milan etc then it goes without saying that if Juventus, AC Milan etc would never in a million years consider appointing the likes of Curbishley et al then neither should England.

I had forgotten about Curbishley! Can you imagine having to put up with his whining every day in the papers? At least at Charlton he is in a little corner where no one has to take any notice of him...

Well Pollard (and Andrew Paterson), I don't often agree with denizens of the success-free end of the Seven Sisters Road but Big Phil's fine by me. The principle of appointing a foreign manager was accepted Sven Yoran Ericksson, to retreat from that now is an absurdity. The plain fact is that there is no English manager with a CV remotely approaching that needed by a candidate, hence the need to go shopping abroad.

Howard Wilkinson was interviewed on the Today Programme this morning and presented a most underwhelming case for the appointment of an Englishman, It amounted to nothing more then "Boo hoo, we want an Englishman, the FA didn't listen to us." And Steve Briggs is right, in football terms Martin O'Neill is as foreign as a Chinaman. I do wonder who consists of the lobby opposing the appointment of a foreigner, because I don't know anyone who does.

These days world class jobs in any field should be open to world class talent. In this sense Scolari clearly outshines his English rivals. There may be a day when a genuine English contender emerges, but I can't him it coming from the current McLaren, Curbishley, Allardyce generation.

This might stick in your throat, but my man for the England job was your old friend Arsene Wenger.

As a blues fan i had to rule pearce out early, and the only way i would have been pleased to see Allardice as manager was in a one against one decision against martin O'neil

Why not McLaren for England manager? Ok, he's better known as a BBC rugby commentator, but he'd certainly do a better job that Curbishley, Allardyce etc....

The question is: How deep are Phil's bodies buried?
