Mido, Yiddo

There was a glorious moment at White Hart Lane on Saturday. Turning the chants which we used to have directed against us by opposition fans to our advantage, we yell 'Yid Army' generally and 'Yiddo' specifically when one of our players does something good.

Our new signing, Mido, made a stunning debut against Portsmouth, scoring two goals and playing superbly throughout. So he was, of course, granted the honour of a 'Yiddo' chant.

Mido is Egyptian. It was rather wonderful to be able to yell 'Mido, Yiddo'. Israel does, after all, have a peace treaty with Egypt.

And if the Jew-haters were to shout, "Hamas, Hamas, all Jews to the gas", as they do at soccer matches in Holland, would they also "turn that to their advantage"?

Yet another example of the shtetl Jew being his own worst enemy.

This 'post-modern' means by which persecuted/abused/marginalised minorities can neutralise the venom of attacks is quite disturbing. Claim 'Yiddo,' 'queer,' or 'nigger' etc. for yourself, and it becomes a term of ironic communal self-empowerment, especially amongst the youth, and removes from your persecutors one mode of abuse. Indeed, used in a personal context it is a sign of closeness.

But the problem is that this can serve to mask the real hatred that still exists. Just because you may not be offended any more by being called 'Yid,' etc. it doesn't mean that the skin-head addressing you such is being friendly or ironic...
