Superb piece by Michael Ignatieff in the Observer:
Americans and Europeans who have never lifted a finger to defend their own right to vote seem not to care that Iraqis are dying for the right to choose their own leaders.Why do so few people feel even a tremor of indignation when they see poll workers gunned down? Why isn't there a trickle of applause in the press for the more than 6,000 Iraqis actually standing for political office at the risk of their lives?
Explaining this morose silence requires understanding how support for Iraqi democracy has become the casualty of the corrosive bitterness that still surrounds the initial decision to go to war. Establishing free institutions in Iraq was the best reason to support the war - now it is the only reason - and for that very reason democracy there has ceased to be a respectable cause.

Dear Mr Pollard,
I was interested to read your piece on Mr Socranie and genocide.
I'm interested that no one seems to compare the creation in August 1947 of Pakistan and Israel. The creation of the former led to the death of over 1 million people, and created some 18 million refugees. Yet I have yet to meet a Muslim who thought Pakistan should not be created. Yet the creation of Israel, with much much less violence is bitterly condemned as a crime.
It just depends on whether the result creates a new Muslim state, in addition to more than fifty others already in existence, or the world's only Jewish state, doesn't it?
Maybe you would care to make this point from time to time?

You are right: it's a superb piece. Many thanks.
Ian Mordant, Pakistan was created out of territory belonging to India, as you know, with the agreement of India. Yes, the loss of life in the sectarian violence was beyond appalling. But the territory was not disputed. It belonged to India and India ceded some in the West and some in the East to Pakistan after very lengthy deliberations and negotiations.
As you know, the Palestinians think they have a grudge because they believe (or have been led to believe) that territory on which Israel was created actually belonged to them.
With respect, the creation of the two states is not comparable and your argument does Israel no service. I am very pro-Israel, but false analogies cheapen the whole argument.
