It will not happen. The British spirit has been thoroughly suborned into a grovelling, sycophantic obeisance to the pretentious, posturing, quisling totalitarian state and its acolytes. The perception of quality and character associated with words Oxford and Cambridge is hopelessy belied by modern realties.

It's no good seeking inspiration for academic independence at Harvard-- not after the way Larry Summers has been grovelling to the fit-of-the-vapours feminists on his benighted campus.

That's the problem with having universities dependent upon markets - they have to pander to other concerns.

Simon Jenkins is a puzzle. He is capable of hitting heights of eloquent brilliance on certain issues, such as the dangers of a police state, etc, but loses the plot totally on stuff like Iraq and the other day he called for jury trials to be abolished.

First time I've heard any sense from him. Has he got a ghost writer?

Uh ... Jonathan ... I've got my hands up in front of my face to ward off the blows, but, actually, I think trials by jury are passé, too. So much is held back from them in the service of not "prejudicing" them, and so many jurors are infused with politically correct lefty views, and so many of them are so ill-schooled that they are simply unable to follow, and retain, arguments. The days of "twelve honest men" and the assumption that they would apply simple common sense to the arguments and do their best to be fair are over.

In Singapore, there are no trials by jury. Trials are open, but they are conducted by three judges. These men (there may be women, too; I don't know) are trained to separate facts from emotion, they know the law backwards and they are able to come to conclusions without reference to the possible consequences to the accused.

Given the quality of today's British juries, I would far rather have my fate in the hands of three skilled, intelligent judges of Singapore quality than the predudices and internecine hatreds of a British jury. OTOH, this presuppose an incorrupt and incorruptible judiciary, and that is not the case in Britain.
