The Sir Simon Jenkins award results
» Posted on November 8, 2004 05:23 PM » Category: Meejah

It's time to reveal the results of the poll for the Sir Simon Jenkins award for the most reliably wrong-headed columnist.

I wish I could say it was a tight contest. It wassn't. The winner received 35% of all the votes, which was a major triumph considering there were ten strong candidates, any one of which would be a deserving winner of this most precious accolode.

The results, in reverse order:

(cue drum roll)

Mary Dejevsky 1%
Fergal Keane 1%
Tim Garton Ash 3%
Jackie Ashley 6%
Sir Max Hastings 6%
AN Wilson 7%
John Humphrys 13%
Sir Simon Jenkins 13%
French foreign policy 16%

And the runaway winner:

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown 35%
Personally I am disappointed, since much as the Yazzmonster is a deserving winner, she has - yes, this is true - been known to be right (albeit rarely). As opposed to French Foreign Policy which, while not strictly eligible for the award, has nonetheless never been known to be right. But the people have spoken, and I am happy to be able to award the prize to Ms Alibhai Brown.

As I stated on the get out the vote post at my blog, the problem with French Foreign Policy is that there are whole areas (such as French Domestic Policy) where it is unable to offer guidance. Ms Alibi-Brownshirt, however, has so far showed no similar limitation and indeed has commented about practically everything under the sun.

I have just posted on my blog about the nuanced French foreign policy, which, unlike the trigger-happy cowboy capering of the toxic Texan, seems to be bearing such rich fruit in the paradise state of Cote D'Ivoire.

Well. didn;t vote. Actually have some time for YAB who is stuck between a rick and a hardc place as a relatively liberal Muslim.

However were I to vote i would now vote for

Mary Riddle, writing for the Observer this weekend. In fact she has written the piece de resistance of cultural marxism - the ideology which blames the West for everything, from Islamic homophobia, to homosexual "islamophobia". In this piece, eveything gets mashed together, the West is always to blame, Theo Van Gogh death was caused by Hollands intolerance, and it turns out, that Jamacian homophobic music is caused by Repbulican Senators.Or something.

A reliable, if a bit eurocentric poll. As a yank, I feel we are left out of the Most Wrong Headed prize, to which I feel we have many strong candidates.

While not to disparage a fine list of fools and poltroons, you have neglected many fine American cadidates such as Mssrs. Sidney Blumenthal, Paul Krugman, Victor Navasky*, Terry Gross, Alexander Cockburn (please, please, please stop sending us micks), the entire editorial departments of the Nation, the Progressive, the Village Voice are high contendors. USA, USA, number one! We have the BEST idiot! (ahem)

Really, how dare you have an idiots contest and not invite the heavyweight contendors? Why, to have a Best of and not invite others is...well, a lot like American baseball.

*- Although Sir Navasky may be out on terms of being an editor, as well.

You missed Madeleine Bunting and Peter Preston.

You missed Stephen Pollard.

Oh, and James Versluys? Please stop calling us 'micks'. Also, your criteria for a poor columnist seems to be 'anyone I disagree with'.
