Melanie Phillips is back, and as ever she hits the nail on the head. Responding to another dreary 'it's all our fault' piece by Max Hastings, she writes:
The fact is, as I wrote in my article for the Daily Mail today, the single greatest incentive for acts of terrorist mass murder is the response of those who blame the terrorised rather than the terrorist, respond to every act of mass murder by signalling yet greater weakness, demoralisation and fear, and make it worth the terrorists' while to ratchet up the violence. It is this weakness and moral confusion that comprise the great goal of terrorist strategy; it is this that has characterised the west's response to Islamic terror for many decades; it is this that has brought us to where we are today. Hastings concludes that terrorism is winning. Very true -- but only when it results in attitudes like his own.
I fail to see how any decent human being can even begin to explain away what happened in Beslan by reference to the West's 'savagery' and 'vengeance', as Hastings attempts to do. Even Yasmine Alibhai-Brown writes , quite rightly, that
For now, for me, this crime has no place even within the farthest boundaries of human behaviour.
This was evil, pure and simple. The war on terror is, indeed, a war in defence of our civilisation and our values of free speech, tolerance and liberty. And as such, those who oppose the war on terror are, however pure their motives, aiding and abetting our enemies by undermining our resolution.
But it is also a war against pure evil, just as World War Two was a battle of good versus evil. The forms taken may differ; Al-Q'aeda are not Nazis. National Socialism is not the same as Militant Islam. But just as the former had to to be defeated to defend freedom, so must the latter.
(Incidentally, Hastings' piece contains a foul sentence which fatally undermines his already weak argument with a simply warped view of Israeli policy:
Israel does itself relentless harm by venting its spleen for suicide bombings upon the Palestinian people.
Whatever one's views on the rights and wrongs of Sharon's counter-terror policy
- and mine concur to the letter with Oliver Kamm's - to refer to Israel's response to mass murder of its citizens as 'venting its spleen...upon the Palestinian people' is grotesque.)

Terrorism is the new type of war today. The conventional warfare of the two World Wars, the Asian conflicts, and the Cold War, are, for now, methods of the past. Sad, but true. Another change: Fascism and Communism were political ideologies; Islamic terrorism is mind-controlled insanity.

I assume you didn't bother to read any of the article before jumping right in Aron.

It may be grammatically confused, but you can clearly see that the 'now' is meant to refer to Chechen cause having being poisoned by what happened.
Max Hastings would describe himself as a "One Nation Tory" although his tenure at the "Evening Standard" was marked by almost unqualified support for Tony Blair. His views are entirely representative of the appeasement tendency within the Tory Party, and especially within its One Nation wing. When editor of the "Evening Standard", Max Hastings was an unqualified supporter of the Northern Ireland "peace process": all concessions to the practitioners of terror were justified. Similarly, he firmly believed that post-imperial guilt meant that the UK had no right to criticise the atrocities committed by the Mugabe Government in Zimbabwe. There are many within the Tory Party - especially on its's anti-Bush Europhile wing - who share Max Hastings' thinking. In some cases, the views expressed have carried an unmistakeable whiff of anti-semitism. Has Tory thinking on foreign affairs really progressed much beyond the mindset of Septmeber 1938?
I don't think being pro or anti Europe is particularly relevant to the pro/anti Bush faction. The most virilent Bush haters read the Daily Mail.
It's great to know that Stephen Pollard agrees 100% with Melanie Phillips and Oliver Kamm, given their bitter disputes in the past. And who would ever have guessed it would be Israel that brought them together?
