Let me offer a brief summary of the left-liberal approach to foreign policy: we should stop Africans dying but Iraqis can go to hell. How else can one explain the hypocrisy that surrounds the now overwhelming calls for intervention in Sudan emanating from the same mouths which so opposed intervention in Iraq?
It is now — rightly — taken as read that, with a humanitarian disaster unfolding before our eyes in Sudan, we in the West have a moral obligation to do our best to stop it. That means more than just sending food aid. It means military intervention, either to force the Sudanese Government to take action itself or, if need be, to do it ourselves. And if that involves armed conflict, so be it.
You would be hard pressed to find anyone who describes himself as being even broadly liberal in outlook who opposes the idea of military action in Sudan. Certainly not Sir Menzies Campbell, the Lib Dems’ foreign affairs spokesman. Last month Sir Menzies wrote to Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, demanding that he instigate an EU-led military intervention in Darfur. As he put it: “It is becoming increasingly clear that food aid and pressure on the Sudanese Government alone will not be sufficient to stem the impending disaster in Darfur. An EU military force operating under a UN mandate looks like the only answer if we are to prevent a disaster on the scale of Rwanda a decade ago . . . Britain too must also contribute to any such force so far as it can. This has now become a matter of critical urgency.”
Sir Menzies has, for reasons which can be explained only by his articulacy and confident bearing, developed a quite undeserved reputation for wisdom. The fact that on almost every issue, from the euro and the development of the EU to the threat of militant Islam, he is dangerously wrong, seems to have been masked by his impressive countenance. And when, by the law of averages, he is eventually right — Sudan, for instance — he is right only as a result of breathtaking inconsistency.
When criticising the UN Security Council resolution on Sudan last month, he argued that “it seems to me to fall a long way short of what is necessary, . . The timetable involved seems unnecessarily prolonged and one can only imagine the hunger and suffering which will take place in the next 30 days. The truth is there has been too much dithering over Darfur.”
Quite. But if 30 days is too long in Sudan, 12 years (the period during which Saddam ignored UN resolution 687) was not long enough in Sir Menzies’ mind for the Iraqis to suffer. This is the man who, in his determination to oppose intervention in Iraq and thus to ensure that Saddam remained in power, free to butcher his countrymen, argued that no military action should be taken against Saddam. “Let the weapons inspectors take as long as they need,” he wrote before the war. And when we did finally take action, Sir Menzies was at the forefront of the opposition.
Sir Menzies is far from alone in adhering to the warped moral calculus which dictates that action against a vile Sudanese Government is fine but action against a vile Iraqi Government not. The unspoken reason is clear. As ever, it comes down to antipathy towards the US. Action against Iraq was led by the US; that against Sudan will not be. And action is only justified if it is not led by the US.
The revolting truth is that such sentiments are shared by most of the liberal Left, who rank their belief in humanitarian action below their antipathy towards President Bush and, more generally, the United States.
So much for the fabled internationalism of the Left. So much for the idea that human beings are what count. To the anti-war liberal mindset, human misery is less important than hatred of America.

It is NOT a "humanitarian disaster". That phrase could describe a drought, crop failure etc (remember Band Aid?). This one is genocide - the deliberate attempt to kill civilians because of their ethnic background. Calling it a humanitarian disaster is another loony-left ruse to make people think that it's no-one's fault. In reality the Sudanese Govt should be in the dock for crimes against humanity. Fat chance though... I wonder why that might be???
Maybe the EU or France and Germany in particular do not mind intervening in the Sudan because the Sudanese leadership do not spend billions on arms etc. from their respective countries.
Maybe if vile leaders such as the sudanese, chinese, korean, palestinian were brought to book, maybe their financiers and main contacts may be brought to book. Wonder who they are?
Oh yes the French, the Germans, the Russsians.
Seems to be a pattern emerging.
Yeah never really understood why the left does not give a damn about the Kurds. They get slaughtered (with WMDs no less) and the left actively campaigns against saving them (rather than say staying neutral). While on the other hand, black Africans get killed and we have to rush in and save them.
Surely it helps being impressive if your name is spelt Menzies but pronouced 'Ming'?
As a long-time observer of the bleeding heart interventionists, it seems to me that there is a simple picture of soldier-manned refugee camps on the border with Chad that is springing into the soft-power practioners' minds. If the misery of the Sudanese is thereby dragged out over long years while we offer the Sudanese Government bribes not to retaliate against this violation of their territory (to restrain their thugs etc), so be it. If the Sudanese Government merely becomes a long-term killer and abuser rather than a short-term one, then that's the best we can do, sigh. Being seen to do something noble is all that really counts for the soft-power faction.
But what about Zimbabwe, shouldn't we rush in there? And human rights abuses in China? Why are we just sitting back and letting all this happen?!
'Liberal' is a rather nice word which has been subverted by the fascist left and its meaning perverted. I suggest we retire this word for a period of two years, minimum, until the centre and right of centre gets up the nerve to reclaim it confrontationally.
Ed - if anything, it is the opposite ... Menzies is pronounced as though it were 'ming is' with the two syllables mildly elided ...
In Scots, "ming" is a verb synonymous with "reek" as in, for example, to "stink of corruption" ...
When one adds that to the fact that Sir Menzies' clan affiliation is with the clan who betrayed the ancient Laws of Hospitality and perpetrated the Massacre of Glencoe, then should we really be impressed ?
But if the West does nothing about Darfur, won't the accusation of hypocrisy apply to nearly everyone? Because if we're to equate human misery in Iraq with human misery in Sudan, that will mean, if we're to be consistent in our actions, we should intervene militarily in Sudan.
And why spend time vilifying the left, when you should be campaigning for something to be done?
I like your writing, Mr Pollard, but this time it don't add up.
This ridiculous trend has been developing on the left for years - they are prepared to support military action, but only when it has absolutely nothing to do with the national interest. I recall Howard Dean calling for intervention in Liberia back in the spring while simultaneously campaigning against the Iraq war. Kosovo was another example, though obviously many leftoids opposed that (which was consistent at least, unlike the Dean/Campbell position).
The left really has become an intellectual vacuum. Their self-loathing Western meekness is such that they see any intervention which serves their own countries' interests as squalid and neo-imperialistic. For them, force can only be legitimately deployed when we have nothing to gain. It should be evident to anyone who thinks about this for even a few minutes that this is an extreme position to take, but because idiots like Campbell articulate it in a reasonable-sounding patrician idiom and are barely challenged by their ideological proxies in the mainstream media, it actually gets taken seriously. Mental!
"To the anti-war liberal mindset, human misery is less important than hatred of America."
And to my mindset, the human misery of foreigners is of no importance whatever unless it turns into a threat to my interests as a white Christian Briton. Screw the lot of them.
Henry, you are wrong. Just because "we" have intervened somewhere, doesn't mean that we have to intervene everywhere. If we worried the whole time about being hypocritical then the only solution would be to do nothing about anything. That would at least be consistent. To my mind, better to do something somewhere than nothing everywhere.
I think that there is another thing at work here. Iraq had a major military, with major hardware, and lots of soldiers in arms. It was also believed that they would use WMD's during the war. In other words, a war against Iraq would be a real war, one with lots of soldiers getting killed. It also required a very large military effort to carry off.
All these things are a problem for the Euro-pacifists. They don't want to engage in any real war, where large numbers of soldiers might come home in body bags. For them Iraq was too big to touch--in effect, the Euro-pacifists were sucessfully deterred by the size and abilities of the Iraqi military. On the other hand, Sudan is likely to be relatively easy. You just have to move in, surround the refugees, protect them, and set up an airlift to bring in supplies. You might lose a few people here and there, but you won't be risking whole regiments in the face of chemical weapons.
In addition the size of the attack force needed for Iraq was well beyond the capabilities of Europe. Only the US could have done it--with or without help from allies. I think there's something of a "if we can't do it, no one should" attitude at work here. Sudan is a smaller fight, and it could probably be done with some sort of European force fighting on its own. That allows the size of the problem to match the size of the capability. This makes it touchable. Sudan doesn't have the firepower to deter. It is therefore acceptable to talk about taking some sort of action.
I will, however, not be holding my breath in anxious anticipation of the European Strike Force moving in to save the Darfur refugees. Once the process has been fed into a few dozen bureaucratic committees for feazibility studies, rewrites of the rewrites of the resolutions, environmental assesments of possible ecological damage from such an action, etc, I expect the Darfur problem to have been brought to a final solution long before a single European boot touches Sudanese soil.
I laughed out loud when I read Ming Campbell's pompously indignant response to Stephen in the letters column of the "Times". Campbell apparently thinks that there is key distinction between (a) Kosovo, where he supported intervention; and (b) Iraq, where he did not. That difference is allegedly the imminence of genocide. It says a lot about the ethics and the quality of the Lib Dem leadership that Ming Campbell has clearly never talked to Emma Nicholson about the fate of the Shia and the Marsh Arabs under Saddam Hussein. She could tell him a lot about both from first-hand experience. Nor does Ming Campbell seem to regard as "genocide" the industrial slaughter of the Kurds by the Baath Party. Is it just possible that his contrasting stances on Kosovo and Iraq may have more to do with prising away elements of the Muslim vote from Labour? In short, not high principle but the seedy opportunism which is the hallmark of the Lib Dems?
Don't expect any military intervention anytime soon in Darfur. The left's record of combatting human rights abuse in post-colonial Africa is atrocious: think of Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The left and its fellow travellers in the churches have never been prepared to stand up to black, racist crypto-Marxist tyrants in the way in the same way they have opposed white supremacist governments in Africa. Mugabe's government is every bit as racist, cruel, corrupt and incompetent as the one it replaced but that does not stop him being the "liberator" of Zimbabwe in the eyes of the Guardian-reading classes. Expect lots of pious words but no deeds.
