Michael Howard - worse even than IDS?

It's an astonishing sight, watching a once respected politician disappear from the first to to the third rank before your very eyes.

I used to regard Michael Howard as a serious figure, a man who as Home Secretary insisted that his task was not to stem the increase in crime but to reduce it, and who had what the Tories used to call 'bottom'.

And yet with each passing day, and each passing issue, he descends lower and lower into the abyss reserved for third raters promoted above their level of competence. The Peter principle - that employees within an organization will advance to their highest level of competence and then be promoted to and remain at a level at which they are incompetent - should be renamed the Howard principle.

Whatever he may be doing for the Conservatives internally - and the evidence on that seems mixed at best - as a potential PM, Michael Howard seems almost wilfully intent on demonstrating that he is not fit to occupy high office.

Today's shameful attempt to reposition himself on Iraq is beyond parody. Howard seems to think that he will gain favour by attempting to have it both ways on Iraq. I don't often agree with Labour's spin, but today they are spot on: he is indeed "plumbing new depths of opportunism". And like most opportunism, it will end up pleasing no one. Those of us who understand that Blair and Bush are leading the fight to save Western values now view Howard with contempt. And the Stoppers too can see straight through his pathetic attempts to curry favour with them.

Leave aside the astonishing cynicism of such an approach. The reliably stupid Amanda Platell remarked on Breakfast With Frost this morning that Howard was performing an adept technical shift which would allow him more effectively to oppose Blair in the Commons debate on Iraq this week. No! No! No! With such an astute tactical brain advising William Hague, it's no wonder he was so stunningly succesful.

All Howard has achieved is to remove any element of doubt that he and the Conservatives are still not remotely close to learning the lessons of two election defeats and are heading for - at least - three. One-off opportunism has its purpose, and can be useful. But consistent opportunism, such that the electorate comes to expect nothing more of you, is deeply damaging. And today's statement is far from a one-off. His earlier attack on Blair for not standing up for Bush would have been hilarious were it not for its wider importance (so much is he in favour of hitting out against the US that Howard spent his years off the front bench setting up an organisation designed to bolster links between the UK and US, and specifically between the Conservatives and the Republicans), just as his response in the Commons to the Hutton report was inept, cheap and lacking in judgement, refusing to back away from his attacks on Blair as lying over Iraq.

His embrace of possible fuel protests and and his opposition to the introduction of the very market-mechanism into higher education to which Conservative principles clearly point were purely opportunistic.

It’s trite to say oppositions are supposed to be opportunistic. It’s also plain wrong. As Blair showed in opposition, when your credibility as a potential Prime Minister is the key battleground, you need to show that you are above opportunism. Howard has managed to achieve the opposite: while Blair was originally Bambi and over time showed he was a figure of substance, Howard started off as leader with credibility as a serious figure, and has set about eroding it. And now he's succeeded.

IDS might have been useless at communicating with the electorate. But he did at least say what he thought, and then stuck to it. Michael Howard says what he thinks people want to hear - and gets even that wrong!

And his promises to close/reform & fire most of CCO's staff hasn't happened either. As long as you have that den of vipers there is not way in hell the Tory Party will win the G.E.

You never know, he might prove the opposite of Harold Wilson, so that people will one day say of him 'Had he not occupied highest office everyone would have doubted his capacity to do so.'

Have you read what he actually said?
He still supports the war on the basis that Saddam was not only a clear and constant threat to his own people but was also a primary source of instability in the Middle East and around the world.
That is certainly why I supported the war and reflects the reasons that President Bush gave in the run-up to the war.
Do you really think that intelligence reports, as published, make up a compelling case that the Iraqi government had WMD? I think anyone with any common sense ould have thought that, on the balance of probabilities, Saddam did have - or was producing - weapons of mass destruction. However the evidence contained within the intelligence briefings fell well short of a standard of proof that would have justified war on that basis.

Can I start in the traditional way and say that I am not a conservative, but have always voted tory since 1979 (my first) on the grounds that the up and at them core of the party were for small goverment, free trade, anti EU, less tax etc. I believed that the socialist wing of the party was kept in place and would die when Heath etc retired.

However it seems that this is all being abandoned, Michael Howerd should be supporting Blair on foundation hospitals, university fees etc. setting an even more radical agenda. This would have the twofold advantage of restating proper "Whig" policy but would actually increase the pressure on Blair from his own party (how many will help the tories defeat a labour goverment if push comes to shove.) Now he has changed into a lib dem, supporting Saddam and his ilk.

Th Iraq war is a winner for me and would get ny first ever Labour vote, if not for the long list of negatives

I'm with Steve Shackleton. It's entirely possible that for the very first time I will vote, faute de mieux, for Labour at the next General Election (although I'll probably simply abstain). I was once a die-hard Conservative voter. I used to stuff Tory Party leaflets through people's letter boxes and helped in GOTV efforts on election day. I feel like Ronald Reagan: I haven't left the Conservative Party - it's left me. My disillusionment started the day that awful nebbish Major took over from Maggie. I left the UK to escape Brown's marauding, but I can't see matters improving under any other party. The war is my overriding concern, and Howard's stance on it is reprehensible. We've even seen the execrable Michael Portillo calling for a Kerry victory in November.

I think it's unfair to accuse Michael Howard of opportunism just because he refuses to assume the role of excuser-in-chief for Tony Blair's fibs about weapons of mass destruction. I supported the war because I believed - and how naive was that - Mr Blair's assertions that Saddam was a danger to us. It can't be New Labour spinning, I thought. Of course, it was. I suppose Blair could have concocted any justification (Saddam supports Al Qaeda, Saddam is planning to invade Gibraltar, Saddam wants to privatize the NHS), but the WMD claim was felt to be, and probably was, most effective in persuading queasy Labour MPs to support the parliamentary motion for the invasion of Iraq. Yes I know Mr Pollard, the Neo-Conservatives and others think (or perhaps these days merely hope) that the war was wonderful regardless of its putative justification and will prove to be the best thing ever for Iraq, the Middle East and beyond. Well, only history will tell us whether this adventure produces the effects they predict, and if you are going to embark upon a dangerous war on the back of a thought experiment, at least be honest about your motives, so parliament, the press and the rest of us can say whether we’re quite as keen to go along with it. So good luck Michael Howard. Do your job. Be leader of the opposition. And bring to account this dodgy, dissembling PM.
