Here is a modest proposal. Let’s hire a theatre, assemble a cast, commission a playwright and stage a play on the moral dilemmas involved in deciding if Saddam Hussein should hang or get life. And, then, let’s put on a prequel, a play which asks how he ended up in the hands of the Iraqi people themselves in the first place, ready to be tried for his crimes.
And let’s write it as a satire. Let’s satirise the monstrous stupidity of the “million morons” — we’re trying to be as offensive as possible — who marched last March to try to ensure that we did nothing to prevent Saddam remaining in power, free to carry on butchering his own people. It would certainly be different from Follow My Leader, Alastair Beaton’s “satire” on the Iraq war.
Here’s a challenge: have a guess how George Bush and Tony Blair are portrayed. Not that difficult, really. Bush is — who would have guessed? — a brain-dead religious fanatic. And Blair is his fawning crony.
If you want to guarantee yourself an adoring audience among the chattering classes, make sure you have Beaton’s penetratingly original take on events. You’ll go down a treat.
War has always been one of the prime subjects of theatre. Since theatre quite rightly deals with both timeless and immediate issues, so it should be. The Iraq war has prompted a series of plays and productions that attempt to deal with the war on stage. I would love to be able to write that it has prompted a range of such events; if only. With one exception, the range, such as it is, extends from attacking Bush and Blair for being stupid to attacking them for being evil. That the issues involved might be rather more complicated seems to have passed most playwrights and directors by.
Take Guantanamo, the latest in the Tricycle Theatre’s “Tribunal Plays”, a series of adaptations of transcripts from inquiries, including those by Lord Justice Scott and Lord Hutton. Based on interviews with some who have been released from the Guantanamo detention camp and with their friends and relatives, the production was such a hit at the Tricycle earlier this year that it has had a West End transfer and will soon be off to New York.
The play has been garlanded with praise from bien-pensant opinion. And yet to any observer who has not already decided that the US Government is malevolent and the al-Qaeda threat effectively made up, the play is at best naive, at worst grotesquely biased agitprop. The excuses of the detainees — in the main, that they just happened to be on the battlefield in Afghanistan and are innocent, kind to their mothers and thoroughly decent chaps — are trotted out one after another. The audience laps it up as further confirmation of how awful the war is and that the real threat to democracy is the Americans’ abuse of human rights.
There is no hint that the story might be rather more complicated — that how democracy deals with threats from sources which do not recognise our laws of decent behaviour poses an impossible dilemma.
The programme contains this jaw-dropping account of the Taleban by Gareth Peirce, a solicitor who represented the detainees and is portrayed on stage: “By the mid-1990s the Taleban — the name means ‘scholars’ in Arabic — had formed the government in Afghanistan and were attempting to set up a truly Islamic state. A diaspora of refugees, and indeed non-refugees, around the world thought that the ideal was one in which they wished to participate and a small but significant number of individuals moved to Afghanistan in an attempt to be involved in the creation of that state. They set up schools, rudimentary industry, agriculture that was not based on the production of heroin, and were inevitably, as a diaspora, in touch with the wider diaspora worldwide.”
Decent chaps, then. And how thoroughly beastly of the Americans to get in the way of their altruism. Let’s not concern ourselves with the fact that they were in league with al-Qaeda and just happened to facilitate the hijacking of four planes on 9/11 to murder as many Americans as possible. They did, after all, set up schools — even if Afghans of Ms Peirce’s sex weren’t allowed to use them. And al-Qaeda members caught in Afghanistan and elsewhere were simply part of the “diaspora”.
Playwrights and directors seem concerned only to pander to their audiences’ and their own prejudices. There is an easy — and lazy — way to get the audience on side at the moment. Flash up a picture of George Bush whenever there is a mention in the text of murder or crime and the audience can see immediately that you, the director, are as sophisticated as they are and know how awful the man is.
Even Measure for Measure isn’t exempt. The production at the National, an otherwise thoughtful and gripping updating of Shakespeare’s difficult play, can’t resist gratuitous projections of the image of George Bush. He is a modern-day pantomime villain. At the performance I saw, the audience hissed when his picture appeared.
I can barely begin to imagine what Sir David Hare, the liberal establishment’s favourite playwright, will come up with in Stuff Happens, his take on the war, which is due to open at the National in September. According to the blurb, “David Hare has fashioned both a historical narrative and a human drama about the frustrations of power and the limits of diplomacy.” Hmmm. Let’s venture a guess. Bush wants to bomb the crap out of Iraq because Saddam outlasted his daddy. And Blair was his poodle.
Yawn.
There is, however, one valuable exception to this otherwise uniform approach: Cruel and Tender at the Young Vic, a play by Martin Crimp based on Sophocles’ Trachiniae. Sophocles’ story is about a war hero, Heracles, and his wife, Deianira, and the cycle of violence engendered by her jealousy. Crimp turns Heracles into a contemporary army general fighting in the war on terror. Through his story, Crimp prompts a thought-provoking series of questions about how best to deal with terror — through force, through appeasement or through some other method — and how democratic societies are unwilling to face up to the dirty deeds which might need to be done to save them from their enemies.
It is a rich, deep play which is of immediate contemporary relevance and which manages to avoid the trite anti-war, anti-Bush certainties of so much else.
So there is hope that there are still some in the theatre who are able to step outside the confines of the knee-jerk liberal establishment view. There is hope, too, from the reaction of some of those who are not in the audience. As I was waiting outside the theatre to see Guantanamo, an American family stopped to look at the billboard. “I wonder,” said the father angrily, “if the Houses of Parliament had been blown up whether they would be so keen to let the terrorists run free.”

"Bush is ... a brain-dead religious fanatic. And Blair is his fawning crony."
I thought you said this was a satire?
"... how democracy deals with threats from sources which do not recognise our laws of decent behaviour poses an impossible dilemma."
Excuse me, but isn't that what democracies do all the time?
Do any criminals recognise our laws of decent behaviour?
Harold Shipman, Ken Noye, Peter Sutcliffe, Child molesters, Muggers, Wife beaters ....? What we need to avoid is allowing the criminals to lead democratic society itself into discarding those same laws of decent behaviour.
That has always been, after all, the aim of most terrorism.
“I wonder,” said the father angrily, “if the Houses of Parliament had been blown up whether they would be so keen to let the terrorists run free.”
Of course they would. This segment of the anti-war Left is incorrigible. If al Qaeda had marched every member of Parliament down to the Embankment and shot them in the back of the head on live TV, David Hare would be asking what they'd done to bring it on themselves.
How very droll Harry. If Bush was a brain-dead religious fanatic, half the middle-east would be a radioactive wasteland. And it still might be unless people realise what's at stake.
We live in an age where it is becoming increasingly possible for one man to murder a million. How democracies deal with these people is not an impossible dilemma at all. Democracies kill them any everything that matters to them without mercy. Pardon my lack of Gallic nuance, but is there really any other way?
Stephen says Saddam Hussein "ended up in the hands of the Iraqi people themselves", which is complete tosh. He ended up facing a US appointed tribunal run by Salem Chalabi, nephew of the embezzler, Iranian spy, and neocon favourite Ahmad Chalabi.
Perhaps instead we should have a satire on the "monstrous stupidity" of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders who cheered on an invasion that increased the threat of terrorism. "Traitors" would be an appropriate name.
Surely this play mentions the fact that over 2 million refugees returned to Afghanistan since 2001, not counting the about 500.000 internally displaced people who went home recently. I mean, it must be possible to portray that in a bad and sinister way.
Chalabi's nephew eh? Guilt by association very Senator McArthy,Have you no shame Bobby?
"This segment of the anti-war Left is incorrigible."
Not entirely,. When a fatwa was issued against Salman Rushdie, the Pinter-ites were most upset.
Flying jombo jets into skyscrapers is one thing, but literary censorship is quite another, donchyaknow?
"Bush is ... a brain-dead religious fanatic. And Blair is his fawning crony."
I thought you said this was a satire?
Yeah well mate when you get an MBA from Yale and become a fighter pilot then come back. Bush isn't a cowboy either since he spent most of his time in Maine and Washington, DC. I mean its ok to criticise a President but at least get your bloody facts right. Oh yes and one more thing...Bush had a higher GPA throughout his university education than Gore.
Bush was a pilot, but never a fighter.
Bush is more of a fighter than the gutless wonders who would like to give in to the terrorists.
Luniversal, yes, you're technically correct, I'm guessing despite yourself: the F-102 Delta Dagger that GWB flew, and its successor the F-106 Delta Dart, were interceptors. They weren't for protecting the border against Mexico, as has been snidely suggested, but rather were designed for the principal purpose of taking out Soviet strategic bombers if the US were ever directly attacked, something that was hardly unimaginable at the time.
Andrew, pedantic correction: the President's undergrad degree was from Yale. His MBA's from Harvard. Your point obviously still stands.
Coming back a bit later on. Sorry, should have said 'Wally', not 'Harry'. Anyhoo - good to see the apologists getting a kicking here. Good fun!
Bobby - bobby, bobby, have you always been a disappointment? No mention of anything better since the liberation (yes, liberation) of Iraq? How about this? There will be no more long trenches of the clinically killed. No more gas attacks on Kurds. Electricity production up. No more humans being fed into plastic shredders. No more money will be sent to families of homicide bombers in Gaza and the West Bank. And that's for starters.
Well that's the bad side, the good side is that Iraq will be able to sell their oil on the world markets without those leeches in the UN taking a cut. They may buy American machinery, they may not. To be frank, I don't think the US cares too much - they're putting billions into Iraq after all. If it were all about oooiiil, the US would have talked to people who live in the Eastern 40km of Saudi Arabia (who aren't the nutter Wahabis), and where almost all the oil is, and helped declare the place a republic, and then dared anyone to do anything about it. Bingo! - look at oil maps of SA and the ethnic makeup of that area to see that this is a plan with legs.
Ok, the Iraqis don't like us. So what? The French wanted us out of their country just a few months after liberation in 1945, they wanted to forget what had happened (and they did - quickly). People don't like it when someone else comes into their country and does what they should have done. The Iraqis, with that almost suicidal Arab honour ethic, want to do all things themselves, and the coalition has given them that opportunity in an almost unbelievable 15-16 months. Many Iraqis will die over the next few years, and I believe it will be mainly because of Syrians and Iranians infiltrating their country.
These are big stakes. If the Iraqis make a good fist of setting up a constitutional government, that will be terrific. If they don't, well a country, assailed on all sides by enemies is very weak, And China and India both need a lot of oil to fuel their growth...
What has this to do with some pompous play, designed for the glitterati and the intellectually vacous?
Very little, and perhaps that's the point. Any idiot can write a play where the tagline is 'Bush lied, people died!', but it's too easy now to fact-check his arse, and ignore him. Nothing can be worse for a playwright to have his work marginalised, and to realise that the people who do attend, were there for the paparazzi before the event.
I always found it insane that the Brits have such serious pshyco-social issues with someone they then call them a "cowboy".
This coming from a country which still bestows honorary Knighthood on it's citizens.
In the US this cowboy or knight nonsense happens only on Halloween
And little bobby above is now scared and claims terrorism has increased solely due to bush.
little bobbby needs to wipe the welfare from his oxygen starved brain.
"There will be no more long trenches of the clinically killed"
None yet found in the south or Kurdistan on the scale predicted before the invasion (cf Yugoslavia). In any case, such killings were mostly committed in the 1980s when Saddam was a US client.
"No more gas attacks on Kurds"
Probably by Iranians during the war-- see Jude Wanniski. Also dates from Saddam's time as a US asset.
"Electricity production up"
From what? It's taken far longer to restore than Saddam took after Gulf War I. One reason why most Iraqis don't view their occupation as "liberation".
"No more humans being fed into plastic shredders."
Oh, pur-lease. Not a "shred" of evidence for this Chalabi tale.
"No more money will be sent to families of homicide bombers in Gaza and the West Bank"
No, just free rein for al-Qaeda and the other terrorist networks to make hay in Iraq as they never could when a ruthless secular dictator was in control of the Syrian border.
"...the coalition has given them that opportunity in an almost unbelievable 15-16 months"
It is pretty unbelievable-- if you swallowed the neocons' crap-- that after a war that was meant to be a "cakewalk" hailed by the suffering majority of Iraqis, it's taken 15-16 months to get a shaky puppet administration in place, with Bremer sneaking it into power and himself out of his ruined satrapy like a thief in the night. But if you recognise the PNAC crusade for what it was always intended to achieve, it isn't in the least unbelievable.
"Many Iraqis will die over the next few years, and I believe it will be mainly because of Syrians and Iranians infiltrating their country"
Independent observers estimate that under 5% of the "insurgents" and "terrorists" in Iraq are non-Iraqis.
David Hare's play may turn out to be more of the same. On the other hand, he did invite the FT's John Lloyd, a supporter of the war, to speak to him and the cast, and Lloyd left to applause from the assembled company. So it sounds as if Hare is a bit more open to divergent views than you think. Let's hope so.
“I wonder,” said the father angrily, “if the Houses of Parliament had been blown up whether they would be so keen to let the terrorists run free.” Well, possibly. But that begs the question. If the inmates at Guantanamo were terrorists (as some of them surely were and some of them surely weren't) bring charges and give them due process. It was the arbitrary nature of the detentions that made this look bad, not the detentions themselves. As someone who is still a (reluctant) supporter of the war, it pains me that so many of the arguments made by our side are so threadbare.
One can imagine a Jacobin like Gareth Pierce defending Pol Pot as a "bucolic dreamer". Ugh. What is wrong with these clearly highly-intelligent people that they should want to preach such nonsense? Do they think it will make fanatics, bigots and murderers spare them? Remind me never to hire her as my brief.
Finding trots in a west end theatrical group is a bit like discovering cross-dressers in a 'revue bar'. Tell us something we didn't know. As for the Houses of Parliament: if there weren't people in the UK who would blow the place up - the Special Branch and MI5 wouldn't have anything to do. I don't believe Syrians are providing much manpower to the Iraqi insurgency. I just came back from a nice holiday in Syria, and it is a very well run little National Socialist Country. Nobody makes any waves, because those that do are firmly discouraged. Last time they had any trouble from the local 'muslim brotherhood' they holed them up in one town and used artillery to wipe out lots and lots and lots of them. I strongly recommend the place.
