Is there any reaction to this nonsense from the sane left? The left that used to be opposed to religious fanaticism all of 5 years ago?

Where are the anti-religious columinists now: or have any leftwing columnists and opinion formers moved to the "right" if they opposed this nonsense? Polly Tonbee sometimes fights the fight - however it seems that "progressive" belief among the middle classes is mere chimera.
This group is fond of "progressive" ideas, in the same way that their forbears were fond of "progressive" rock: they support any ideology as long the ideology is in. Every so often what defines coolness among the rock pantheon changes, and one now likes a totally differerent sound: every so often the progressive ideology changes and you believe the opposite to what you believed 5 years ago.

The left used to be the foremost attackers of religious extremism, now, by and large they support it - as long as it is Islam at it's most fundamentalist.

As an aside, I see Blunket is trying again to describe anti-religious bigotry as a hate crime. You may want to hide your copies of the Life of Brian.

You can rest assured that the only people who get prosecuted for inciting religious hatred will be those who criticise Islam. Those who abuse the Jews or smear the Catholic Church in the pages of the "Guardian" will get off scot-free.

I agree with everything that's been said about this man but if you think he's a extremist Muslim check out the criticisms of him posted on this Islamic site: Some Mistakes of Yusuf Al-Qaradawi" Makes him sound positively liberal.

Islam did not spread from the Arabian peninsula by sending missionaries to educate and persuade people to become muslims. It spread through conquest and forcible conversion. Pakistanis are muslims today because their country was invaded and occupied and their ancestors were terrorized into becoming muslims. The same is true of Algerians, Chechens and Palestinians.
The Ottoman Empire relied heavily on forcibly converted Christians to swell its Army.
A brief look at the Quran shows that islamic doctrine is violent and totalitarian. It is (still) the duty of every muslim to continue the process of conquest and forcible conversion.
It follows that there is no such thing as a moderate muslim cleric. Every mullah who knows the Quran will incite muslims to kill the unbelievers.

The post I read on the whole terror/Jewish/Islamic/Bush thing is so fragmented. There are usually two sides in any game, but not in this game. In this endgame between Muslims on one side and the "free" people on the other, the third team has largely been dismissed or ignored and yet this from where the trouble is stemming.
