I may indeed be a 'snivelling Bush arse-licker' as one correspondent informed me recently, but I thought this letter in today's Guardian rather fun. Asked to suggest new public holidays, Marilyn Partridge writes:

How about July 4 - Dependence Day?

Trafalgar Day (October 21), to be joined in future with the commemoration of British withdrawal from the European Union. Nelson's victory and sacrifice will remind us how we smashed a previous attempt to create a unified system of continental tyranny.

We Gooners celebrate St. Totteringham's Day - the glorious day each spring when it becomes mathematically impossible for Spurs to finish above Arsenal. It usually occurs around Easter, but we find it moving earlier and earlier each season. Why not make it a public holiday.
