I'd agree with that (except with the word "repression"). I just think that it's not our fault if we do continue. It's the anti-semites' fault.

It seems that all Max Hastings does these days is slag off Israel in the newspapers. I found most shocking his suggestion that pro-Israel papers are only that way inclined due to the interference of Zionist owners or pushy letter-writing Jews. What does he want? For no Jews or Zionists to own newspapers, or perhaps for Jews to be prohibited from writing letters to the editors. It seems that the ideal set up would be lots of Guardians, Indies and even Evening Standards, who churn out article after article of pro-Palestinian apologetic guff.

More than that, I found his opening story hilarious. Good for him for walking out, but does the anecdote somehow give him immunity against his later spiteful remarks against the Jewish community. It's as bad as saying "some of my best friends are Jewish".

Max Hastings has become a senile judenhass git. I used to rather enjoy his writing now I wouldn't use his writing in a bird-cage. Watch a total wretch he has become.

I wonder what Sir Max would say if you asked him if Muslims who are subjected to hateful abuse (or even just silly Kilroy columns) are to blame for their treatment because they haven't been more critical of Osama bin Laden and his ilk.

The key intellectual flaw is here:
"The Israeli government's behaviour to the Palestinians breeds a despair that finds its only outlet in terrorism." (italics added)

Forget about Ghandi and Martin Luther Kind, then. The only choice for the Palestinians is terrorism? Give me a break. It's a choice, not a necessity.

This sounds familiar. Anti-semitism is the Jews' fault for being beastly to the Palestinians. It reminds me of the people who asked what the US had done to make the terrorists hate them so on the morning of 9/11. Besides, if Israel treated the Palestinians in the way that the latter would treat the former, given their druthers, there wouldn't be any Palestinians.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but within Israel & the wider Jewish society there is a spectrum of opinion, isn't there? No one government or set of policies reflects the true beliefs of the World's Jewish community any more than any British government and policy set can ever reflect the vast scope of interest, opinion and debate that makes up UK.

Similarly no one monster or his co-horts can represent the true sentiment of the Palestinian people. They've been shafted by pan-arab refusal to let them immigrate as a political football vs Israel and they are ruled by the most vicious ignorant prehistoric idealogues au style Saddam Hussein.

There are only two possible approaches to resolving the situation: defeat or compromise. In the UK the political classes have convinced themselves that compromise is best, per Northern Ireland. This leads to Arrafat becoming Israeli education minister or such. Given this frame of reference Sir Max's argument is rational, even if you don't like it.

Mr Sharon and many in Israel (like those who voted for him) tend towards the more principled "defeat them" logic. From this perspective anti-Zionism is intellectual drivel, ergo Sir Max is spouting dung.

Given his background and reputation as a decent man, I think it safe to put him in the set that turned Gerry Adams fom murderer to nobel laureate pretender.

So Stevie boy does that mean that we either have to shut up completely and not actually bring Isreal to account over *anything* because it is equatable to Anti-semitism?

Dosen't that mean that *any* critique of say the Taliban would be forbidden because that would be anti-islamic?

Or that to critisise say Zimbabwe for it's horrible treatment of white and black alike is racism because the government is a Black one?

Please Mr Pollard, wake up and smell the roses. Just because you are Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, British, Irish, American or *whatever* dosen't entitle you to protection from critisism. If you do something that brings shame to your nation then you can't just say "you can't critisise me! Racist! Racism!" you just simply can't.

Having briefly met Max on the Golan Heights in the early seventies when all about us was destruction and chaos I am disappointed to hear his views publisied so strongly. We are all aware that Israel has lost the way in recent years but this is down to the politicians involvement on all sides, not the decent hard working Israelli individual or to that the Palestianian refugee who is depossessed of his culture and his homeland. Oh for a magic wand to wish that all could live together what a wonderful magical place the Middle East would be.This is the ramblings of an old soldier who has earned the right to speak. Shalom.
