LibDems, dontcha luv 'em?

Oliver Kamm is back in full flow, and I'd recommend all of his recent posts.

But given our shared interest in a key public service - to wit, drawing the full extent of LibDem wisdom to the attention of those to whom it might otherwise have escaped notice - I simply have to link to this post on the mighty Don Foster, a figure who deserves to be reckoned with as much his colleague Phil Willis (BTW, what is it with LibDems and monosyllabic abbreviations - Ed Davey, Ming Campbell et al ? And why not Jen Tonge, Al Beith or Char Kennedy?).

Stephen, Steve (Ste?): in your haste to ping another arrow of woe at the heart of the Lib Dems, you seem to have listed three MPs who shorten their names and three who, erm, don't. Now, history may prove me wrong, but that hardly seems like a concensus...

If the insinuation is that somehow it's more informal or approachable to drop your full name, then I'd also point you in the direction of Labour cabinet ministers such as Jack Straw, Geoff Hoon and the conveniently abbreviated (though admittedly double syllabled) Tony Blair.

Yours,

Bob.

I don't even think Phil (Willis) is an abbreviation.

OK, OK! Point taken. Can't anyone take a (obviously unfunny) joke?

Stick to your guns, Stephen. This bloke-ish use of nicknames and abbreviations is one of my bugbears, too. We can't be the only ones that think that perhaps a little gravitas is advisable in a politician on the national stage. Id much rather see Blair referred to as Anthony (actually, it would've been even better if he'd decided to use 'Lytton' as his Christian name).

Tsh, Ste... I thought you'd be able to read the inherent jokiness of my response, but it seems not.

I'm all for poking fun at Lib Dems, dear sir, but jokes often work better when they're funny and accurate.
