I should have linked earlier to Melanie Phillips' posts on the whole WMD issue. She has been assiduously pointing out what David Kay has actually said, rather than the distortions which have been reported (see here, here, and here).
If you haven't read her yet, I urge you to ASAP.
As she rightly puts it:
[T]he tenacity with which Tony Blair is standing his ground on this issue, in the teeth of widespread catcalls, ridicule and pressure from so much of the country and the media, is heroic. He is doing so, it seems to me, because he still genuinely believes what he was told when he came to office, that Saddam was an unconscionable threat that had to be dealt with and that the nexus between terrorism and WMD was the most deadly danger facing the whole world. Like him, I still believe that to be the case.

"WMDs, where are they?" is the generic complaint of the anti-Iraq war opponents, which is not only the wrong question - as if you could comprehensively search Iraq for envelopes of Anthrax - but ignores Iraq's pre-First Gulf War history of superguns (failed), gassed Kurds (and Iranians) and an attempted nuclear reactor (bombed by Israel). You don't need much intelligence to realise that Saddam and the aptly named Axis of Evil are international versions of your professional criminal - few in number but complicit in most of the crime. Blair and Bush understand this, and for them to cave in would be craven, not just politically, but personally as well. Better to be chided than a Chamberlain.
