Annie Hall

Lost In Translation

A Man For All Seasons

Hannah And Her Sisters

High Society

Metropolitan

The Producers

Rushmore

When Harry Met Sally

I've only ever heard of 2 of them...

Not a Western among them. I've never before entertained the possiblity that Stephen may be a Euroweenie. Even after his pusillanimous climbdown on the salutary effects of public smoking bans. Now, I have to wonder. What about "The Searchers" or "The Outlaw Josey Wales"? How about "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge"? Oh well. At least there are no inane Hugh Grant light comedies on his list.

Er, I forgot to mention "Bodacious Tatas."

There are a couple of VERY politically incorrect expressions for Mr. Pollard's list, but I'll keep them to myself - as I'm confident that they occurred immediately to all REAL MEN who read it.

Okay, so he's not into guy movies, fine. But what's a gent who looks so far down his nose at all forms of music other than "classical" doing with WHEN HARRY MET SALLY on his all-time best list?

I am confounded. Still think Stephen's terrific, but I don't think there's a single film on his list that would make my personal top 50 - either as CINEMATIC ART or as MAJOR FUN.

I mean - he invited me to sneer, so I sneered...

I always thought you harboured UHB values, Stephen.

How about

Close Encounters
Saving Private Ryan
Butch Cassidey
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Get Carter
The Long Good Friday
Close My Eyes
The Draughtsmans Contract
etc etc etc

I think you need to cast your mind back a bit Ste

Happy Christmas and lets hope someone improves your dvd collection....

All top tens are transitory and films are not all about art. I could have two lists one of which would be about the top ten films in terms of artistic values and another top ten of films I enjoy, feel comfortable with and eat popcorn to. They would be completely different lists, but both valid. Then there are those truely dire films which you enjoy even though you know you shouldn't.

I think he needs a link to the Esquire list of top ten guy movies - anyone? It was a pretty good list, as I recall, and the DVDs would go well on the other side of his all-beef diet. Hmmmm... Atkins, capital punishment... I think that weekends of DIE HARD, THE WILD BUNCH, CLIFFHANGER, PREDATOR are coming soon...

Happy Holidays, man.

"A Man for All Seasons" is on my Top 10 list too, Stephen, containing one of my all-time favorite movie lines: "The nobility of this country would have snored through the Sermon on the Mount, but they'll labor like scholars over a bulldog's pedigree."

And also, (delivered by Scofield at the foot of the stairs to the block): "See me safe up Mr. Executioner, but as for my coming down, let me shift for myself."

Wish movies like that were still being made.

Gotta have The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Goodfellas, Dirty Harry, Unforgiven, On the Beach, My Father's Glory, My Mother's Castle, Jean de Florett, and, yes, A Man For All Seasons.
