Good on you, Polly
» Posted on December 17, 2003 10:05 AM » Category: General

I was about to post a sneering comment about this piece today by Polly Toynbee in which she tells how she was taken in by a Nigerian scam. Something along the lines of 'you can't fool all of the people, all of the time, but you can fool Polly'.

And then I stopped myself (I hope you appreciate that little journalistic trick of saying what I said I wouldn't after all say). Read the piece, and then tell me in all honesty that you would never have made the same mistake. Anyone with any charitable instincts would be vulnerable to such a scam, and she made what seem to me like pretty sensible checks.

I can't stand Polly T. I have to change channels if I see her on TV, her liberal pieties and condescending, smug superiority far more than I can take. But I have to say that in this instance she emerges with a lot of credit as someone who is prepared to put her money where her mouth is - and is prepared to admit in public that she was hoodwinked.

I agree that she seems truly kindhearted, but I still think she is incredibly naive. This shines through in her political views as well.

No, I wouldn't have made the same mistake. But maybe that's because, coming from an immigrant family where people from the "old country," claiming to be relatives, would hit us up for money on a regular basis, I don't fully trust overly familiar strangers from abroad who have a sob story and their hand out. She didn't even check to see if the school existed, which seems fairly daft to me.

Yes. An idiot and not the least because she belives this kind of claptrap: The "US is about to hold another election that will be largely bought and sold by business and oil interests."

Stated by: GH on December 17, 2003 11:16 AM

I felt a bit sorry for her too - the only way to never be scammed is to harden your heart to all. That's why these people deserve exemplary punishment. I doubt Polly agrees.

Stated by: Steve on December 17, 2003 11:46 AM

I have to agree with Jackie who says that Polly Toynbee has always demonstrated naivety in her politics and now in her choice of who to give charitable funding too as well. In one sense, I agree with Stephen, she has done a public service by publicising the way these scams are getting more sophisticated and being honest about being taken in. It may seem obvious to those of us who use the net a lot but there are many people out there who are not aware of these things and can be easily taken for a ride. But, and this is a big but, I really couldn't stomach the last part of the article which effectively suggests that capitalism and crime are one and the same thing. Is Polly really suggesting that it's only because of free market reforms that such scams exist? Did no one ever try to rip anyone off before the advent of the IMF and World Bank? Yes, email and globalisation may have made it easier but surely Polly cannot believe that it's all the fault of capitalism that we have crime? Time for a Pollard rant, methinks.

Stated by: Helen on December 17, 2003 12:48 PM

Polly, as with all of our liberal elite, is unable to accept that black people may be less than perfect - or if they are, that there is any reason other than the depredations of white (male) colonialist exploiters aided and abetted by American capitalists directed by George Bush's neo-con colleagues. I wonder how she (and her Guardian cabal) will react if and when that charlatan Al Sharpton becomes president of the USA. A real poser that. A black-led USA surely cannot be evil, can it?

Stated by: Michael on December 17, 2003 1:20 PM

Like you, I found her compassionate reaction moving. However, the end where it all appears to be Dubya's fault is completely delusional. What is it about the British left that requires them to project all their problems onto the current incumbent of the White House?

It was very telling, amidst the story of Livingstone's proposed re-admission into the Labour Party, to hear again his Moonbat accusations against Mr Bush. If he believes such statements, then he is too cretinously ignorant, incurious and stupid to be considered for his current job, and should be removed immediately on medical grounds. If he doesn't believe such an appallingly serious accusation, but nonetheless makes it in public, he should be removed immediately on moral grounds.

Have Londoners lost their collective marbles, have they been lobotomised by watching too much Orla Guerin, or do they just not care?

You're all being too kind. There are three key elements to this tale:
- Nigeria
- Unsolicited Mail.
- Request for money.

Could it be any more obvious? The woman is a halfwit and always has been.

Stated by: Ross on December 17, 2003 1:26 PM

Stephen,

I'm afraid the spirit of Christmas has badly distorted your judgment. The whole point of Polly Toynbee - indeed the whole point of blogging - it to sneer at people.

Stated by: Peter Briffa on December 17, 2003 1:31 PM

I may have my rectrospecto-scope on viewing this but as soon as someones asks for money I am suspicious, and a PO Box address for the headmaster - no sympathy for her what so ever. And then having the cheek to tack on her standard anti capitalist bilge within it.

Stated by: Rog on December 17, 2003 1:58 PM

Limited sympathy for Polly's plight.
However, the bit that really gets me is the "Think of the corruption that US and UK conservatives carelessly unleashed upon the former Soviet Union in the name of extreme free market ideology" section.
Let's take a step back and think through (as she clearly hasn't) what she's saying. Never mind the fact that 8 countries - that's 75 million people - have completef the journey from behind the iron curtain to political and economic freedom and will join the European Union in May; never mind that for hundreds of millions of people, living in the former Soviet Union and in former Soviet satellite states, their governments may be no more perfect (and in some cases rather less perfect) than any other country in the world but they would no sooner go back to communist oppression than Polly Toynbee would write something sensible about global capitalism; never mind the fact that the nuclear clock is now measured in hours to midnight rather than minutes. According to Polly, the most significant result of defeating totalitarian communism in the Cold War was the export of corruption.
It's bad enough that these former socialists still refuse to admit that the system that they once supported were morally wrong (rather than just badly applied, misused by a few individuals or any one of dozens of other excuses for those evil regimes) - much less apologise for that support - but when they insist on harking back to a golden age before the influence of western capitalism spoilt the purity of those systems, surely it is time for them to shut up, think of the millions liberated from communism and the millions who did not live to see its fall and join them in thanking God that at least UK and US conservatives had the moral fortitude to make a stand on their behalves.

Hmm. Until very recently wasn't Russia ranked about 100th globally in terms of economic liberalism? Even St.Sweden comes in at around 25th.

Stated by: Kit Taylor on December 17, 2003 6:53 PM

Call me cruel, but anything that results in Polly Toynbee losing money and pride has got to be a good thing.

Stated by: Janan Ganesh on December 17, 2003 7:52 PM

Well, one out of two's not bad, Janesh.

Stated by: Chris on December 17, 2003 11:13 PM

Sorry, Janan, not Janesh.

Stated by: Chris on December 17, 2003 11:14 PM

Foolish woman, not just in her politics and writings, but through and through, and she has the gall to try and disguise her stupidity as 'compassion', - what a piece of work!

Perhaps if she had had to do at least one decent day's work for a decent day's pay, it may have instilled a little basic common sense into her spoiled little head.....

Do you think she would go for it a second time?

Stated by: ernest young on December 18, 2003 3:12 AM

It's not just Guardian columnists and their ilk who fall for scams. Some years ago the Sun sent out to various public figures fake appeals for money purporting to come from needy old people. One of those who fell for it and sent a hundred quid or so was Pen Kent, then executive director of the Bank of England. The Sun made out they'd done something virtuous by arranging for those who do good by stealth to have their goodness made public for all to admire. I felt really sorry for Kent and the other donors who would now be deluged by begging letters.

Stated by: Natalie Solent on December 18, 2003 12:26 PM

Stephen,

Not one of your better calls.

The whole point of this PR effort is leave her gullible readers with exactly the impression you claim she has made on you i.e. Polly is basically decent, generous and honest but prone to listen to her heart rather than her head.

Oh who could not help but love and admire her despite her only-too-human flaws?

Stated by: David Carr on December 18, 2003 3:31 PM

Pious Polly had a good read going until the end, when she launched into her anti-capitalist screed. Crooks from Nigeria are the result of unregulated markets? She probably thinks the same of armed robbers.

Stated by: Polymath on December 18, 2003 6:11 PM

Polymath, that's not such a stretch: after all, if not for the wide array of products offered to the consumer by markets that are, in Polly's opinion, not nearly regulated enough, those people wouldn't be tempted into armed robbery. If they're black, we should heap a few more helpings of pity on them, because Lord knows that people with dark skin can't think straight with the white man's influence around.

She really is terrifically racist in her thinking.

Stated by: Jackie D on December 18, 2003 11:32 PM

I've just picked up on reading other blogs after a period of being elsewhere. I found Polly's story through Tom Watson. The second of my recent elsewhere's was Nigeria. And I managed to grab an interview (in the back of rather bashed up taxi) for the Daily Summit blog with an ex-scammer:

Re Polymath's comment.

The phrase is 'social excess', criminals can't help being criminals you see, what with all that stuff that other people have just begging to be lredistributed. This comes from Anne Applebaum's Gulag

Lenin's vision of labor camps as a special form of punishment for a particular sort of bourgeois "enemy" sat well with his other beliefs about crime and criminals. On the one hand, the first Soviet leader felt ambivalent about the jailing and punishment of traditional criminals--thieves, pickpockets, murderers--whom he perceived as potential allies. In his view, the basic cause of "social excess" (meaning crime) was "the exploitation of the masses." The removal of the cause, he believed, "will lead to the withering away of the excess." No special punishments were therefore necessary to deter criminals: in time, the Revolution itself would do away with them. Some of the language in the Bolsheviks' first criminal code would have thus warmed the hearts of the most radical, progressive criminal reformers in the West. Among other things, the code decreed that there was "no such thing as individual guilt," and that punishment "should not be seen as retribution."
