Is there a scale of excellence in music? (The Independent)
» Posted on September 22, 2003 12:17 AM » Category: Music

I was castigated by a friend the other day. I have a large CD collection – nearly 3000 – of which fewer than a hundred are anything other than classical music: some jazz, some 1960s pop, and some embarrassing presents which I have to keep on my shelves lest their absence be noted by their donors.

It showed, I was told, that I am far too narrow in my tastes. I should open my ears to the wonders of…well, I forget which popular beat combination he suggested I try. As far as I’m concerned, you see, they are almost all a waste of time. I would rather listen to the cacophony of an orchestra tuning up than to the finished efforts of almost every pop, rock, soul, call it what you will, ‘musician’. Some – the Beach Boys or the Beatles, for instance - are perfectly fine as background music, but the idea that any otherwise intelligent person would choose to sit down and listen to them while doing nothing else, or even go out of their way to hear them perform live, strikes me as truly bizarre.

And that, it seems, brands me not just as a cultural snob but as an especially ignorant one at that.

Fine. If that’s what my passion for classical music, and my inability to see merit in rock music, means; fine. My unwillingness to fill up my shelves with CDs of men and women shouting to make themselves heard on top of the noise from their drums, electric guitars and shuddering bass – or, worst of all, the worthless noise known as rap – affects no one except myself. And I’m perfectly happy, thanks.

But as I was watching this weekend’s Leeds Piano Competition (broadcast live on BBC4 and Radio 3), I realised that my response isn’t really good enough. There has to be something more than ‘I like that and I don’t like that’.

Out of the six finalists, each of whom played a piano concerto with the Halle Orchestra in Leeds Town Hall, it was clear to me – and, given the result, also to the jury – that there were two competitors who were head and shoulders above the others: the Finn, Antti Sirala, and the competitor from Uzbekistan, Evgenia Rubinova. The former had won three other competitions, and his performance of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto was indeed excellent: note perfect, classically styled, and fully in command of the musical argument. But Rubinova’s account the previous night of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto was all that - and a lot more. It had something to say. It was of the moment - a real performance, which took off and left everything else behind. It took risks.

The result, of course, was the wrong way round. The Finn won. It was no wonder he added Leeds to his three previous competition victories. His playing was the sort of note perfect, scrupulous playing which juries love: the safe rather than the risky. There was nothing wrong with his playing; but that was its biggest fault. It lacked what Rubinova’s performance had: the spark engendered by real personality and real musical imagination.

I know that the jury are wrong and I am right. I assert it as a fact rather than as a mere opinion. And that, surely, is cousin to my assertion that Beethoven is a genius and REM, and their fellow rock bands, a waste of time. Both assertions are statements of artistic merit, ranking performers and composers on a continuum from the worthless to the genius.

We’ve been here before. Christopher Ricks came at it from the opposite perspective in the 1970s, arguing that Bob Dylan’s lyrics were great poetry. A couple of years ago he argued that Dylan’s song Not Dark Yet ranked alongside Keats's Ode to a Nightingale. Others have made similar comparisons, such as Eric Griffiths’ consideration of Talking Heads alongside William Empson in his Cambridge lectures during the late 1980s.

I look at what they say, at their specific, detailed, academic attempts to equate the two, and my reaction is simply to laugh. To me, it’s self-evidently preposterous – about as convincing as arguing that a finger beating time on a desk is as musically rich an experience as an Angela Hewitt performance of a Bach Partita.

But not to others. To them, a Bach Passion is an interminable drone, a Bruckner symphony an hour long yawn. Does that mean they have a point – that the appreciation of all art is only subjective, and that there is no such thing as a scale of excellence?

Of course not. Unless you really do believe that the finger tapping on the desk is as good as the Bach Partita – or even as good as the Bob Dylan song – then you believe in a scale of excellence. And once you acknowledge that, then there is only one conclusion. A is better than B who is better than C. And if you are trying to tell me that Dylan is better than Bach, then I suggest you lock yourself in a dark room and wait for the fairies to rescue you. Bach elevates, transports, is capable of constant re-interpretation, speaks to generation after generation, and is a composer of near inconceivable perfection; relative to Bach (and, to my ears, in absolute terms, too) Dylan is an unpleasant groaning noise. Turner, Titian or Tintoretto do the same; Tracey Emin can’t even make her bed.

And if you disagree with me? You’re wrong. That, at any rate, is what my friend says to me.

One cannot equate the sublime and the utilitarian,I would suggest there is a place for both. But do try Jazz.

There is nothing wrong with cultural snobbishness, but:

I think Stephen is mistaking musical training with musicality. Anybody can be trained to play the Piano, some will play it well, some as good as the the Uzbekistan, Evgenia Rubinova.

Nevertheless the Beatles are more musical because they actually wrote original music. Ribinova just plays stuff. If it's all about performance, then Rock stars would easily win out.

I was classically trained, but don't particularly like Bach, his work being mathematical rather than beautiful - call me a romantic. If the Beatles had been clasically trained, then instead of writing an album they could have collasced their talents and written a symphony derived from the (very muscial) songs - would that have surpassed Schubert - who stole his stuff from folks songs? Of course.

If Stephen is interested in fugues, he should try out the Beach Boys "God Only knows". Maybe he can find some chamber orchestra who have covered , and he can pretend it was written in the baroque period , if it makes him feel better. It's complicated enough.

Most people who acutally play stuff, Stephen, do not have your somewhat limited ideology.

( On the other hand lyrics are generally awful - with the exception of Leonard Cohen whose "Suzanne" is a minor piece of poetry - I can't think of any, so the dylan criticism stands, but is orthogonal to the music argument)

Lastly, at least the musicans of Rock and Pop , and even electronica are keeping musicality alive against modern "classical" recordings - all din. They are keepers of the Western flame.

I look on pop music as a commodity - something to keep me up to speed while out walking, or to provide the beat and the mood when I feel like dancing, or to sing along with on long car journeys.

Some intellect and much emotional maturity are pre-requisites for the appreciation of the greatness, or lack of greatness, in art and music. Somewhat discouragingly, though, we live in a society and at a time when instability is rife. Its effect is to militate against the development of psychological depth, upon which artistic appreciation depends. As a result, the superficiality of the image rules in the visual arts. The desire for instant rythmic gratification conditions popular music. Indeed, the Africanisation of the latter, which at its best produced jazz, actually invites the listener to become participant, to meld with and disappear under the strong, repetitive rythmic pattern. The uninhibited sexuality that entered dance in the sixties is the consequence. The uplifting experience of greatness in musical is entirely absent from the equasion. Stephen is absolutely right.

Funny, I am often trying to say the same thing when I argue with some know-nothing that *of course* Dylan is intrinsically better than Westlife, or some other ephemeral chart sensation.

I don't listen to much classical music - I haven't discounted it as such, just never been trained to appreciate it properly and haven't invested the time. Instead, I find passion, pathos and meaning in rock and pop. Perhaps Stephen, similarly, hasn't trained himself to appreciate Bowie, Beatles et al?

And perhaps we can judge as unworthy that music which, after we invest time in appreciation, still fails to demonstrate any real charm or depth? I'm struggling here, but it seems that to give in to the "all art is subjective" argument is a kind of perverse self-denial of our own human capability to distinguish beauty.

Stated by: David on September 22, 2003 5:23 PM

I tend to regard non-classical as background music. I can work and listen to rock and pop. I can't do the same with classical music - I have to actually sit and listen to it.

Stephen, you are absolutely correct that classical music is a higher form of art than rock or pop. You are also correct that being a musical snob is ok. I personnaly have no Classical music CDs in my collection. My CD collection (or more appropriately mp3 collection) consists of diddys by The Smiths, The Cure, Led Zepplin, Son Volt, and others along the alternative-rock and 60's classic rock line. Classical music does not move me, although as a musician I find it fascinating for its technicality and genius. What I like about what I listen to is that....well....I like it. I think if one must define why they like it...it takes the fun out of actually liking it. Music is like wine, some are more sophisticated and some just taste good. Both get you drunk. I am a musical snob as well...just maybe not as sophisticated as you are. In the eternal words of Stewart Smalley....that's...OK.

P.S. I have a theory about Broadway music though...I think people like it because they are told they are supposed to like it by the elites in New York and LA...personally, I think it sucks.

I suppose you have forgotten that it was not only the jury who thought Antti Siirala was the best in the Leeds Competition 2003. Antti also received the Audience Prize. This obviously means that most of the audience disagreed with your opinions. Moreover, Antti also received excellent critics.

Antti Siirala is a fine and interesting pianist, who truly deserves a great career. He takes "risks" when playing romantic virtuoso pieces like Szymanowski 2nd Sonata - which, I think, you did not even hear. In Beethoven, one needs to play in a different way. Playing Beethoven well is still much more difficult than playing Tchaikovsky well. All the professional pianists know it.

It seemed obvious to me, too, that Rubinova was by far the most rewarding performer in the concertos. It seemed beyond dispute, to me also. For all its excellence of execution and the rapt indulgence of the slow movement, the winner's contribution seemed ultimately mediocre in its aspirations, too safe, comfortable. But there was something glimpsed beyond the common run in Rubinova's performance, more challenging, more risky, more unsettling, and ultimately more moving, wiser, profound.
Yes, it seemed obvious to me, too. But obviously I must be wrong.

Is it just that you don't like music that includes singers? There is quite a bit of electronic music that is more similar to classical than it is to dance music. If you want to hear greatness, check out the soundtrack to Requiem For A Dream. It's awe-inspiring. One of the trailers for LOTR: The Two Towers contains a remixed version of the theme from Requiem for a Dream. It's easy to download. Then close your eyes and listen. It's amazing. It's electronic melded with classical. As well, have you ever heard of the Kronos Quartet? They were involved in the making of that soundtrack and did an entirely classical version of the Radiohead album "OK Computer". It's amazing. Sit and compare the pop songs and classical music. They're really astoundingly similar. I bet you could make pop songs out of classical music.

Some pop music is horrid shite. Some classical is horrid shite. if you think that Britney Spears is anywhere on the same level as Louis Armstrong singing "What A Wonderful World" or Billie Holliday singing "Strange Fruit" then you're just biased against the type of music. Or you've never bothered to listen.

Stated by: linden on September 28, 2003 9:29 PM

Although personally speaking, Rubinov has much more magic and personality-charm than Sirrala, whether who is the better one from Siirala or Rubinov , time will tell, but let wish them both a bright carreer ahead.

You like classical music because you like the "cultured" stereotype that is associated with it. You have to attack other music to justify your creepy 3,000 classical CD collection. You're a deuch. Bob Dylan is a genius.

Stated by: Baron David on December 21, 2003 4:13 AM

So very much classical music is boring, predictable shite. It was written to be unchallenging and to please the ignorant, posturing oafs who bankrolled it.
Most good classical music was derided in its day by tools like you who didn't take the time to learn what it meant.
Your obviously limited knowledge of 'pop and rock' music renders everything you say on the topic null. Of course the chart-toppers are crap - they're SUPPOSED TO BE!!! This music is made to make money, just like all the pedestrian symphonic drivel which no doubt infests your CD collection, i.e. folk music - simplistic, beautiful, honest - kidnapped and force-fed like a foie gras duck by showmen who know a formula and sure as hell won't challenge it. A formula for overblown faux-sophisticated pap.
These very same showmen are responsible for today's popular music. Look beyond their awful, vacuous charade and you WILL find music with merit.
If you can be bothered, that is.

Stated by: F. David Bower on March 24, 2004 1:21 AM

I totally agree. It's simply unrealistic to argue that all music is of equal quality and it's simply nonsense to claim that a composer with years of training and dedication is no better than a pop star who is only successful because of sex appeal.
