Help! I'm a Taliban

Fascinating article by my friend Margalit Edelman on the Taliban members granted asylum in the UK. Here are the key paragraphs:

In the past few months, Britain has granted asylum to five Taliban members, including the former sports minister, a Taliban secret-service agent and a young man who admits his continued hatred of the West. Another 12 men are awaiting decisions on their applications. All claim that they face persecution if returned to Afghanistan.

...The British government has taken up these cases with the best of intentions, no doubt, but by providing refuge for enemy combatants, it may create problems all around. It severely undermines the Afghan government's own efforts to establish a functioning state and bring former Taliban ministers to justice, hinders the fight against terrorism, and harms the case of genuine refugees around the world.

...According to Abdul Wahab, deputy head of the Afghan mission in London, the British government's decision to grant asylum status to these Taliban rewards terrorists. "We know that the Taliban are terrorists -- they killed many, many Afghans during their time in power and made our country a home to international terror. It is obvious that they must be brought to justice under national and international law. I doubt the British would give asylum to Nazis," he says.

...Governments have a responsibility to design immigration policies that distinguish between those who want to participate in the system and those who plan to subvert it. Political correctness should not get in the way of making this distinction. True refugees who are escaping violent regimes, war zones, or oppression should not be confused with those who have created these conditions.
